Rooney's son is on the way to following in his father's footsteps |
Kai was named on the bench for the away game against Everton, while 14-year-old JJ Gabriel was given a start. Kai's inclusion in the starting line-up came from a former team-mate of his father, Darren Fletcher, who is now the Under-18s coach.
Capable of playing as a centre-forward or as a winger, Kai impressed for United in the NI Super Cup in Northern Ireland last summer, and was then included in the club's Under-19 squad for the prestigious Mladen Ramljak tournament in Croatia.
The eldest son of Wayne and Colleen Rooney, Kai was born in November 2009. He joined the United academy in 2020 and has progressed through the youth ranks. Speaking about his son, Wayne Rooney once said: “He just plays football, that’s what he’s always done. It’s unfair to expect too much – he’s only 15. But he’s handled the pressure of having the Rooney name very well.”
Kai made his mark as United reached the NI Super Cup final, before losing to Southampton. Wayne and Colleen Rooney were both in the stands throughout the tournament, along with their younger sons Kit and Cass. Jacey Carrick, son of former United midfielder Michael Carrick, was also in attendance.
As for Fletcher, he returned to United as a youth coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then became the club's first technical director in March 2021. Fletcher left that position when Jason Wilcox was appointed.
Last season, Fletcher worked closely with coach Ruben Amorim, acting as a bridge for young academy players to have the opportunity to train and compete with the first team.
