Rooney's son is on his way to following in his father's footsteps. |
Kai was named on the substitutes list for the away game against Everton, while 14-year-old prodigy JJ Gabriel was included in the starting lineup. The decision to include Kai in the squad came from a former teammate of his father's – Darren Fletcher – who is now the coach of the U18 team.
Capable of playing as a center forward or winger, Kai made a strong impression for Manchester United at the NI Super Cup in Northern Ireland last summer. He was then included in the club's U19 squad for the prestigious Mladen Ramljak tournament in Croatia.
As the eldest son of Wayne and Colleen Rooney, Kai was born in November 2009. He joined the Manchester United academy in 2020 and has steadily progressed through the youth ranks. In a statement about his son, Wayne Rooney once said: “He only knows how to play football, that’s what he’s always done. Expecting too much wouldn’t be fair – he’s only 15 years old. But he handles the pressure of being named Rooney very well.”
Kai made his mark by helping MU reach the NI Super Cup final, before losing to Southampton. Throughout the tournament, Wayne and Colleen Rooney were in the stands, accompanied by their younger sons, Kit and Cass. Also present at the tournament was Jacey Carrick, son of former MU midfielder Michael Carrick.
As for Fletcher, he returned to MU as a youth coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then became the club's first Technical Director in March 2021. Fletcher left that position when Jason Wilcox was appointed.
Last season, Fletcher worked closely with coach Ruben Amorim, acting as a bridge to give young academy players the opportunity to train and play with the first team.
