Writing on X (Twitter), Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that on July 29, the police arrested his son Nicolas and his son's ex-wife, Days Vazquez, who had previously accused Nicolas Petro of receiving large sums of money from drug traffickers and smugglers in 2022 during the election campaign to help Gustavo Petro win the presidency.
“As a father, this news is truly heartbreaking… As confirmed to the Attorney General, I will not interfere or exert pressure on their decisions. The law will take its course,” he wrote.
For its part, the Attorney General's Office said: "The penalties will be based on the above-mentioned crimes. At the same time, we will also call on the legislature to impose the necessary travel restrictions."
Before his arrest, Nicolas Petro was a politician in the Atlantico province. He took over the investigation in March this year.
However, the politician also denied the allegations, saying that reports that he received money from drug traffickers and smugglers to be included in Gustavo's peace talks with the rebels were "baseless".
