Writing on Twitter , Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that on July 29, police arrested his son Nicolas and his son's ex-wife, Days Vazquez, who had previously accused Petro of receiving large sums of money from drug traffickers and smugglers in 2022 during his presidential campaign.
He wrote: “As a father, this news is truly heartbreaking... As confirmed with the Attorney General, I will not interfere with or pressure their decisions. The law will do the rest.”
For its part, the Attorney General's Office stated: "The penalties will be based on the aforementioned charges. At the same time, we will also call on the legislature to impose necessary travel restrictions."
Prior to his arrest, Nicolas Petro was a politician in the Atlantico province. He began the investigation process in March of this year.
However, the politician also denied the related allegations, stating that the information about him receiving money from drug traffickers and smugglers to include them in Gustavo's peace negotiations with the rebels was "unfounded."
