
According to the General Statistics Office, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in December 2025 increased by 0.19% compared to the previous month due to rising prices of food and dining out. Compared to the same period last year, the CPI in December increased by 3.48%. The average CPI for the fourth quarter of 2025 increased by 3.44% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. For the whole year 2025, the CPI increased by 3.31% compared to the previous year, achieving the target set by the National Assembly .
In 2025, the CPI increased in 11 months and decreased in 1 month compared to the previous month, influenced by the pattern of increased consumption during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year), the impact of world prices (rice, cooking gas, gasoline) and domestic prices (pork, household electricity, housing maintenance materials, rental housing).
According to the General Statistics Office, in 2025, the price index for housing, electricity, water, fuel, and construction materials is projected to increase by 6.08%, contributing 1.38 percentage points to the overall CPI increase due to a 7.33% increase in rental housing prices and a 6.45% increase in housing maintenance material prices. Additionally, the price index for household electricity is expected to increase by 7.20% due to increased electricity demand and EVN's adjustments to the average retail electricity price on October 11, 2024, and May 10, 2025.

The price index for food and beverage services increased by 3.27%, contributing 1.17 percentage points to the overall CPI increase. Within this, the food group increased by 3.61%, contributing 0.8 percentage points to the overall CPI increase; the group for eating out increased by 3.81%; and the cereals group increased by 0.17%.
The price index for medicines and medical services increased by 13.07%, contributing 0.61 percentage points to the overall CPI increase, due to the adjustment of medical service prices according to Circular No. 21/2024/TT-BYT dated October 17, 2024, of the Ministry of Health .
The price index for other goods and services increased by 4.78%, contributing 0.17 percentage points to the overall CPI increase.
Additionally, the education price index increased by 2.15%, contributing 0.13 percentage points to the overall CPI increase due to tuition fee adjustments by some universities, private high schools, and private kindergens; the household equipment and supplies price index increased by 1.66%, impacting the overall CPI by 0.09 percentage points.
In addition to the factors causing the CPI increase mentioned above, the CPI was also restrained from rising thanks to two groups of goods whose price indices decreased.
Specifically, the transportation group index decreased by 2.14%, contributing to a 0.21 percentage point decrease in the overall CPI, with gasoline prices falling by 8.53%.
The price index for the information and communication group decreased by 0.45%, contributing to a 0.02 percentage point decrease in the overall CPI due to lower prices of older generation mobile phones.
Core inflation in December rose 0.23% compared to the previous month and 3.27% compared to the same period last year.
