People's Artist Bùi Bài Bình was born in 1956 and graduated from the second acting class of the Hanoi University of Theatre and Film. In 1977, he joined the Vietnam Feature Film Studio and immediately received his first work from director Phạm Văn Khoa.
He is beloved by audiences for his portrayal of the "national father," leaving a lasting impression on viewers through films such as "A Small Path into Life," "Silence Beneath the Abyss," "The Flavor of Family Love," "The Wind of Kinh Village," and "The Ghost of the Village."
In his youth, the artist studied car repair before embarking on his acting career. At nearly 70 years old, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh still seems to be full of energy for the arts.

People's Artist Bui Bai Binh shared many memories about his role as Mr. Toai with Tien Phong newspaper , after the series "Our Family is Suddenly Happy" unexpectedly aired during prime time. After "A Small Path into Life" in 2022, he returned with a long-running television project.
Although the character of Mr. Toai in "Our Family Suddenly Becomes Happy" didn't have much screen time, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh still successfully left a lasting impression on the audience.
People's Artist Bùi Bài Bình is the national father figure in "Our Family Suddenly Has Fun".
"When the film was about to air, I said that this role felt like a game. The elderly couple in the film serve both as a backdrop and as a balance between their children. I like the character of Mr. Toai. It's true that the script didn't give this role much screen time, and it seemed dry and difficult to portray. But during the filming process, I studied which parts were funny and which were sad to create highlights," the artist expressed.
He said he really liked the character of Mr. Toai because he had many nuances and material to explore. Beneath the stern exterior of a retired military officer, Mr. Toai possessed a compassionate heart towards his family and society. Mr. Toai was sometimes the main character, and at other times a supporting one.
People's Artist Bùi Bài Bình praised the young team, from the director and screenwriter to the actors, of "Our Family Suddenly Has Fun." He noted the creativity and enthusiasm of the young artists.
The artist's name is associated with many characters with tragic fates on screen.
Many people think that People's Artist Bui Bai Binh and People's Artist Lan Huong (playing the role of Mrs. Cuc) are "veterans" with a lot of experience, so they often guide the younger actors in the film crew. However, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh revealed that he and People's Artist Lan Huong didn't give much advice.
"Even in scenes where the young actors wanted me to act this way or that way to suit them, I listened to them. I've acted with Doan Quoc Dam in several films and I've seen that he's very hardworking and dedicated to his roles. Thanh Son is charming and gentlemanly, but he's responsible in his profession. My three sons in the film are all adorable," said People's Artist Bui Bai Binh.
He has fond memories of filming ending early, when he and his "sons" would go out for drinks together. He jokingly said that filming this movie "used up a lot of beer."
Regarding his familiar co-star, People's Artist Lan Hương, he didn't offer too many comments. The two understand each other very well, having acted together in 4-5 films, both television and cinema. In the penultimate episode, the character Mr. Toại has a scene kissing his wife on the cheek. People's Artist Bùi Bài Bình said it was a lighthearted, joyful scene, with no awkwardness whatsoever, even though both actors are at an age where they could be grandparents.
Never thought about retirement.
After "Our Family Suddenly Has Fun ," People's Artist Bui Bai Binh continues to act in prime-time television drama "The War Without Borders, " filmed in Lai Chau . He confidently asserts that he is in good health and can still enjoy drinking even after turning 60.

"I know many people my age have retired. But I haven't thought about that yet. This profession is unpredictable; some years I'm busy with many roles, other years I have nothing. Filmmaking is hard work, so you need passion to stick with it. The income isn't much, but it's worth it because I get to meet friends and colleagues. The work and passion draw me in. If I stayed home idle, I might end up drinking beer and alcohol, which is bad for my health and a waste of money," said People's Artist Bui Bai Binh.
The artist chatted with a reporter from Tien Phong newspaper in a cafe on Doan Tran Nghiep street (Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi). Previously, he and his wife, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Thu, also owned a well-known cafe on this street. The couple performed and ran the cafe for over a decade.
People's Artist Bui Bai Binh and his wife are the same age and met when they were students in the second cohort of the School of Theatre and Film (now Hanoi University of Theatre and Film). The couple decided to get married in 1981.
People's Artist Bùi Bài Bình has two sons. The eldest works at a bank, and the younger son graduated with a degree in directing. He is happy and proud that his sons are following in their parents' footsteps.
Even in his sixties, he was still enthusiastically acting in films.
Compared to her husband, Ngoc Thu has appeared less frequently on television in recent years. However, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh affirms that he respects and wholeheartedly supports his wife in her artistic endeavors.
"People often say that behind every successful man is a quiet woman, stepping back to sacrifice for the family. But for my wife and me, it doesn't matter who works and who stays home. In previous years, my wife took on many acting roles and often filmed far away."
"I stay at home to take care of the children's meals. We're both getting on in years, so when we agree on something, we chat lively; when we disagree, we each go our separate ways. Like Mr. Toai's line in the film, we're almost at an age where we can't stay angry at each other anymore," People's Artist Bui Bai Binh recounted.
