According to The Sun , Thompson passed away peacefully at his home on April 17, surrounded by family.
Thompson was first diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2013. After overcoming the disease, he returned to the pitch, continuing to play for Bury, Wrexham, Southport, and Carlisle United. In 2016, Thompson returned to Rochdale, where he not only made his mark professionally but also became a symbol of resilience.
Despite a second bout of cancer just months later, Thompson fought valiantly and returned to the pitch less than a year later. The moment he scored the only goal in the final game of the 2017/18 season to help Rochdale avoid relegation from League One went down in the club's history.

Thompson passed away after years of battling cancer. |
After retiring from competitive sports in 2019, Thompson transitioned to motivational speaking. He shared his journey of overcoming adversity, using his own story to inspire those facing challenges in life.
In April 2024, Thompson was diagnosed with his third cancer diagnosis, stage 4, with the cancer cells having spread to his lungs. Despite facing a worsening health condition, the former Manchester United player remained optimistic and fought to the end. He set up a GoFundMe page to support his treatment costs and received over £108,000 from the community.
Born in Bath on March 5, 1989, Thompson joined Manchester United's academy at the age of nine, where he received a top-level professional football training. However, Thompson's career truly blossomed at Rochdale, the club where he spent most of his 13-year professional career.
Manchester United paid a heartfelt tribute to their former player: “Thompson embodies the values of Manchester United. He has always had a special connection with the club since he was a child.”
“Joe’s legacy will live on. People will always remember Thompson,” Rochdale shared emotionally. The team will wear black armbands in their match against Altrincham to honor the former player born in 1989, and will also hold an official memorial service at home in their match against AFC Fylde.
