According to Comrade Khuc Thuy Dan, Vice Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee and Chairman of the Veterans Association of Hoa Lac commune, the area around the gate of Thach Hoa Primary and Secondary School (Hamlet 1) used to be frequently overloaded during peak hours. The road leading to the school was narrow, while the number of vehicles dropping off and picking up students was very large, ranging from private cars and 30-seater buses to motorbikes. Many parents stopped and parked arbitrarily, even for extended periods, right in front of the school gate, causing traffic congestion and posing a safety risk, especially for students.
Based on that reality, at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, the Veterans Association of the commune proactively developed a plan and implemented a model of a Veterans Association group ensuring traffic safety at school gates. The Veterans Association branch in Hamlet 1 was directly assigned to organize and maintain the group's activities. Immediately after its establishment, the group maintained 5 sessions per week, with 4 members per shift, focusing on the hours when students arrive at and leave school, and also ready to assist during school extracurricular activities and large-scale events.
It is noteworthy that the members of the group are all exemplary and highly responsible individuals, such as veterans Nguyen Van Minh, Phung Van Hoi, Phung Van Tra, Nguyen Van Tu, Bui Van Bao... They not only participated from the beginning but also maintained regular and persistent participation throughout the years.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, the team's tasks are clearly and scientifically assigned. Members directly guide parents to park their vehicles according to regulations, avoiding prolonged stops; direct traffic flow in one direction for school buses; assist students in crossing the road, guiding them to walk in orderly rows, ensuring safety when entering and leaving the school.
Beyond simply "regulating traffic," the team members also act as direct traffic law advocates. Through persistent, gentle yet firm efforts, the veterans gradually raise awareness of traffic laws among parents and students. This approachable and responsible method has garnered strong support from the community.
The effectiveness of the model is evident after only a short period of implementation. The long-standing traffic congestion in front of Thach Hoa Primary and Secondary School has been largely resolved; parking has become more orderly; and vehicles are arranged neatly and systematically. In particular, since the model began operating, there have been no unfortunate traffic accidents in the area, and students' safety is ensured when going to and from school.
Entering the 2025-2026 school year, when traffic conditions have stabilized, the group will proactively adjust the frequency of activities to 2 sessions per week (Mondays and Thursdays). However, on rainy days, holidays, or when the school organizes large gatherings, members will still voluntarily be present to assist in traffic management and ensure safety.
The model not only brings practical benefits in ensuring traffic safety and order, but also has profound social significance. The image of elderly veterans regularly present at the school gate, diligently guiding parents and helping students cross the road, contributes to spreading positive values in the community. The model also contributes to visual education for students about traffic awareness, forming civilized habits from a young age; contributing to building a civilized lifestyle and strengthening people's trust in organizations and associations.
