According to AP, Robert S. Mueller III, the former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who transformed the nation's top law enforcement agency into a counterterrorism force after the September 11, 2001 attacks, has died at the age of 81.
"With deep sadness, we announce that Bob (former FBI Director Robert Mueller) passed away on the evening of March 20th. The family requests that his privacy be respected," his family said in a statement on March 21st.

Former President George W. Bush, who previously nominated Mueller, said in a statement that he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of former FBI Director Mueller and praised him for his “lifelong dedication to public service” and for reforming the FBI’s mission.
Former President Barack Obama called Mueller "one of the best directors in FBI history" and said he saved "countless lives" after transforming the agency.
While working at the FBI, Mueller quickly reformed the agency's mission to meet the law enforcement needs of the 21st century, beginning his 12-year term just one week before the 9/11 attacks and serving under presidents from both parties.
The devastating events of September 11, 2001, immediately shifted the FBI's top priority from investigating domestic crime to preventing terrorism.
Later, Mueller served as special prosecutor in the U.S. Justice Department 's investigation into the links between Russia and Donald Trump's presidential campaign. Ultimately, his team found insufficient evidence of a criminal conspiracy and did not make a decision on whether Trump had obstructed justice.
