Diversify livestock to increase wealth.

During a business trip to Hamlet 3 (Dai Phuc Commune), we had the opportunity to visit the family of Ms. Ha Thi Thin. At that time, their simple wooden house was nestled amidst a rocky, barren hillside, surrounded by almost nothing but open space. A mere observation revealed the immense hardships weighing on the family's lives. For many years, they were classified as a poor household. Now, upon our return, the scene before us has clearly changed.

The old wooden house has been reinforced and is surrounded by the green of fruit trees and over 3 hectares of nearly 4-year-old acacia forest. The production space has been reorganized in a scientific and tidy manner. The livestock pens are arranged logically, ensuring environmental hygiene.

The change in appearance reflects a shift in the family's mindset and economic approach. After research, she shifted her focus to raising specialty livestock with high economic value, suitable for market demand. This direction has laid the foundation for improved income.

Currently, the family maintains a flock of over 100 guinea fowl, along with black-buttocked chickens and free-range native chickens. These are high-quality breeds that are popular with consumers.

Besides raising white pigs, she also raises commercial wild boars on a scale of several dozen, providing a stable source of income. During the recent Tet holiday, the entire herd was sold, and she is currently renovating the barns to restock.

Not content with traditional livestock, Ms. Thin continued to experiment with raising over 20 pink-cheeked bamboo rats, a highly valuable specialty. According to her, each model is thoroughly researched before implementation, from the animal's characteristics to care techniques and product output. This approach helps minimize risks and improve production efficiency.

Alongside livestock farming, the family effectively utilizes available resources. The pond at the foot of the hill is used for fish farming, while also providing irrigation water for the tea and fruit trees.

The garden surrounding the house is developed with biodiversity in mind, featuring trees such as sapodilla, mango, pomelo, and jackfruit, interspersed with economically valuable timber trees like teak and mahogany. She plans to expand the area for planting star apple trees to increase her income.

From a poor household, Ms. Thin's family has now escaped poverty and is gradually achieving economic stability. This result is the accumulation of experience from innovating production thinking, choosing suitable models, and persistently implementing them.

According to her, agricultural production needs to be linked to market demand, focusing on high-quality, high-value products, rather than chasing quantity.

Behind the current results lies a challenging process. In the early years of implementing the model, the family faced many difficulties, at times experiencing failures and losing capital.

However, instead of giving up, she continued to learn from experience, adjust production methods, gradually overcome limitations, and stabilize the scale of her business.

Through our interactions, we can see her diligence and flexibility in organizing production, along with a proactive spirit in embracing new things. These are important factors that help the family economic model develop sustainably and suit the actual conditions.

Notably, she is a single mother raising her son, who is currently in university, all by herself. In challenging circumstances, balancing economic development with providing for her son's education demonstrates the immense effort of a worker in rural areas.

From the economic development model of Ms. Ha Thi Thin, it can be seen that if farmers know how to take advantage of existing resources, boldly innovate their thinking, apply science and technology, and especially focus on high value-added products, they can absolutely rise to wealth right on their own land.
