When people think of Van Lang commune, they immediately think of green squash and products made from it. Green squash cultivation began experimentally in Van Lang commune around 2003-2004. After proving economically viable, people started growing it on a large scale. Today, the entire commune has nearly 100 hectares of green squash and is famous for its products such as Van Lang green squash tea and fresh squash, which are sold throughout the country.
Comrade Pham Ngoc Doanh – Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Van Lang commune – said: The entire commune has 690 farmer members. In choosing the main crop for local economic development, most farmers trust green squash. In terms of economic efficiency, 1 hectare of green squash can yield 41 tons, with a selling price ranging from 8,000-10,000 VND/kg at the lowest and 21,000-22,000 VND/kg at the highest. Annual revenue from green squash is at least 350 million VND/ha, and up to 700 million VND/ha at the highest, however, this depends heavily on output and market demand.
This is a model of free-range chicken farming combined with ostrich farming by farmer members in Van Lang commune, Ha Hoa district.
In addition to growing green squash, farmers in Van Lang commune also cultivate other vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage, and seasonal greens. To ensure high yields and quality, the commune's Farmers' Association regularly collaborates with the district's Farmers' Association, Lam Thao Superphosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company, and various seed and livestock companies to organize technology transfer sessions, guiding farmers in selecting high-yielding and high-quality plant and animal varieties. They also provide advice on fertilizer use, proper planting and care techniques, and pest control. Furthermore, they support farmers in finding markets for their products through trade promotion programs, introducing them to supermarkets and wholesale markets.
Thanks to this, agricultural products from Van Lang commune are increasingly gaining a foothold in the market, becoming widely known and highly appreciated by consumers. In 2023, Van Lang green pumpkin was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product. In 2024, the commune had two more products recognized as OCOP products: Van Lang green pumpkin tea and Thieu Quang Hung rice noodles.
The model of raising bamboo rats has proven to be highly economically effective for Mr. Nguyen Van Duc's household in Zone 4, Van Lang commune.
Along with crop cultivation, in livestock farming, besides raising pigs and chickens, people in the commune have developed several models of raising bamboo rats, rabbits, honey bees, ostriches, etc., providing stable income. Among these, the bamboo rat farming model of Mr. Nguyen Van Duc's household in Zone 4 is a prime example, yielding high economic efficiency.
Thanks to careful and proper care, the bamboo rats are growing and developing well.
Mr. Duc shared: "In 2019, realizing that raising bamboo rats could bring many economic benefits, I decided to build cages and experiment with raising the first pairs of bamboo rats."
Mr. Duc's family raises two types of bamboo rats: the Thai peach-cheeked bamboo rat and the Vietnamese spotted bamboo rat. The peach-cheeked bamboo rat has the advantage of high fertility, heavy weight (approximately 4-4.5 kg/animal), and a high price, making it popular in the market. The Vietnamese spotted bamboo rat is a common, easy-to-eat, and easily marketable species, weighing 2 kg or less, meeting the needs of the general, budget-conscious customer. Currently, his family is raising 300 bamboo rats, with peak numbers reaching 600-700. Revenue from raising bamboo rats, after deducting expenses, reaches approximately 200 million VND per year. The main market is restaurants, eateries, and local residents...
The pink-cheeked bamboo rat weighs over 4kg.
With the development of diverse economic models, the face of Van Lang commune has changed significantly, and the lives of its people have improved steadily. The average per capita income currently reaches approximately 55.2 million VND/year, and the poverty rate has decreased to 5.4%. In the coming time, based on the actual situation, Van Lang commune will continue to promote economic development solutions, attract new occupations, create jobs, and increase income for local workers. It will mobilize all resources to further improve infrastructure and enhance the material and spiritual lives of its people. It will continue to explore, discover, and replicate effective economic models, linking production with product consumption, creating sustainable outlets, and helping this area become a prosperous and increasingly developed rural community in Ha Hoa district.
