The South Korean team won the championship after easily defeating Taiwan (China) in the final. For the Vietnamese team, third place was a step backward because in the three previous editions of this tournament, the Vietnamese women's team had won the championship every time.
However, the fact that the Vietnamese team lost the championship is not the most upsetting thing for the fans, simply because at the 2026 Asian Nations Cup, the team could not bring its strongest squad to the Philippines for various reasons. In sports , winning and losing are commonplace. And for the Vietnamese team, in a tournament that was more or less a test of new players and a stepping stone to the 2026 Asian Games in a few months, what was equally important as the ranking achieved was how they won and the reasons for their losses.
Unfortunately, the team failed to achieve both of the aforementioned goals. The ranking is clear – third place is a step backward. New players didn't perform well, and long-standing weaknesses were exposed, even worsening. In the loss to Kazakhstan (2-3) in the group stage and to South Korea (0-3) in the semi-finals, the defensive ability – especially the first pass – was very poor. A weak first pass led to passive passing, mainly sending the ball to sideline 4, which not only made it easy for opponents to anticipate but also reduced the effectiveness of middle blockers and opposite hitters in supporting the outside hitter. This has long been a noticeable weakness of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team, especially when facing strong teams like Thailand, China, and France... Not to mention other limitations, to varying degrees, such as the speed of the passer, the ability to execute tactical runs to create diverse attacking strategies, and ball-saving skills...
It's not just about the underperforming athletes; it's time to address the role of the coaching staff, those who have been in charge of the team for a long time but haven't helped improve the aforementioned shortcomings, especially in defense. Without addressing these fundamental issues, we have little chance of advancing to the world's top tournaments.
