Da Lat in the season of jacaranda trees.

These days, when visiting the mountain town of Da Lat, tourists no longer see the cherry blossoms that painted the streets pink at the beginning of the year, but instead the serene, romantic purple of jacaranda flowers, creating a unique characteristic of this tourist destination.

Going back in time, the jacaranda tree is a subtropical species originating from South America. In 1962, the late agricultural engineer Luong Van Sau (1942-2004) brought jacaranda seeds from France. However, it wasn't until 1994 that he successfully propagated jacaranda trees using the grafting method.

And then, jacaranda trees were gradually planted on a large scale along many streets in Da Lat, such as in parks and tourist areas. In fact, the Tuyen Lam Lake tourist area even has a street named after the Jacaranda tree.

To date, the most beautiful jacaranda trees are still located on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street in front of Da Lat Market (Xuan Huong Ward - Da Lat), with three tall trees boasting wide canopies and vibrant purple blossoms; among them is the oldest, original jacaranda tree personally planted by engineer Luong Van Sau. Every year, the tree still displays its beauty, contributing to the scenic highlight of the city center.

While cherry blossoms are a flower endemic to the mountainous region of Da Lat during the Lunar New Year and spring, for over half a century, the people here have also become familiar with the image of jacaranda trees blooming, signaling the arrival of summer.

According to data from the People's Committee of Xuan Huong Ward, Da Lat, within the ward alone there are approximately 2,000 jacaranda trees planted along roads such as Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Nguyen Van Cu, and in the grounds of schools, hospitals, offices, and the Tuyen Lam Lake National Tourist Area.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Phuc, a resident of Xuan Huong ward, Da Lat, shared: “The jacaranda tree blooms for a longer period than the cherry blossom, meaning it creates a beautiful landscape that lasts longer. I think the local authorities should consider planting jacaranda trees interspersed with other flowering trees so that Da Lat will forever remain a large flower garden with flowers blooming all year round.”

Ms. Tran Thi Vu Loan, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Xuan Huong Ward, Da Lat, informed that the ward will continue to expand the scale of planting jacaranda trees along roads, new residential areas, public areas, and prioritize planting at hospitals, schools, religious establishments, and agency headquarters to create a green, clean, and beautiful landscape and improve the living environment. The People's Committee of the ward will coordinate with the Management Board of tourist areas to plant, especially to further expand the jacaranda forest in the Tuyen Lam Lake National Tourist Area to create a beautiful floral landscape and attract tourists.

The purple jacaranda, scientifically known as Jacranda Mimosifolia D.Don, belongs to the Brix family. The tree can grow up to 10 meters tall with a canopy diameter of 3 to 7-8 meters. Its tubular, bell-shaped flowers, 4-5 cm long, grow in clusters and are a deep purple color. Because of their resemblance to the phoenix flower, the local people call it the purple jacaranda.
