The British Council has announced the projects that have received funding from its "Connecting Through Culture" (CTC) program – a program that promotes creative collaboration between UK and Asia- Pacific artists. The program supports 84 creative projects, including 10 collaborative projects between Vietnam and the UK, aiming to foster stronger partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region.

Celebrating richness and diversity

84 creative projects received support from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam; including 10 projects from Vietnam: "Experimental Contemporary Performance: Exchange/Connection between Vietnam and Scotland" (artists Mamoru Iriguchi, Take me somewhere, and Tra Nguyen); "Kieu - Reimagining: Women, Heritage, and Empowerment" (Timothy Allen, Da Nang Tui); "Photographic Empathy: Vietnam and New International Photographic Perspectives" (IC Visual Lab, Studio Tum Lum); "Vietnam - UK Live Music Incubator Program 2024/2025" (Association of Independent Festivals - AIF); "Vietnam Music Industry Network" (VMIN); "HOZO International Music Festival"; "Connecting Ecological Pain" by artists Youngsook Choi, Heart of Glass, and Á space; "Empowering Music" by Huong Doan and Music Ally...

The "Connecting Through Culture" program, with a total funding value of over £741,000 (approximately VND 24 billion), aims to support artists and cultural organizations in realizing their creative visions. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai shared that to receive funding, projects must be compelling.

More importantly, these grants will help build lasting cultural partnerships between the UK and countries in the Asia- Pacific region, fostering dialogue, innovation, and mutual understanding.

"The cultural foundation is built upon the unique perspectives of each project, effectively spreading awareness and promoting progress in understanding—these are the goals and hallmarks that each project aims for. I am delighted that these 10 projects have the opportunity to flourish creatively and further promote the people and country of Vietnam," said Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai.

The funded projects are diverse, spanning many fields including film, creative technology, literature, visual arts, theater, dance, design, fashion, crafts, and music.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Thao, Director of the Arts and Creative Industries Unit at the British Council in Vietnam, commented: "These projects have demonstrated outstanding potential in intercultural collaboration. These partnerships will celebrate the richness and diversity of artistic exchange while helping to address pressing issues of our time. We look forward to witnessing the transformative impact of these projects as they are implemented and realized."

The British Council is the UK's international cultural and educational cooperation organization, established in 1934, with offices in over 100 countries and a presence in Vietnam since 1993.

From July 12, 2024, the British Council announced that applications for its "Connecting Through Culture" grant program are now open. Specifically, Vietnamese artists can apply for grants of up to £10,000 (approximately VND 320 million) for projects promoting international cooperation between the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

The program accepts applications for all art forms, with a preference for proposals related to climate change response, diversity, and inclusion. Projects supported by the program must include at least one UK-based partner and one Vietnam-based partner.

Donna McGowan, Director of the British Council in Vietnam, affirmed: "We are proud to support new and innovative collaborations between the UK and Vietnam through our cultural engagement grants. These grants will help spark big ideas through partnership."

Among the 10 projects, "Experimental contemporary performance by artist Tra Nguyen and Mamoru Iriguchi, Take me somewhere" attracted attention. This is because Tra Nguyen has a slightly different perspective from the trend of mainstream theater, choosing her own path of "creating plays to discuss how to make plays."

Alternatively, the "HOZO International Music Festival," organized jointly by the Ho Chi Minh City Light Music Center and Beyond Communication JSC, aims to create an internationally renowned cultural and artistic brand for the city.

Continuing its aspiration for music without borders, in 2024, HOZO continued to be a focal point for international cultural exchange. Talented artists from across five continents converged in the vibrant urban space of Ho Chi Minh City, bringing together world-class artistic stages to create a unique symphony conveying a powerful message of unity, peace, and a "One world, one beat" world.

With the vision of making Ho Chi Minh City the most vibrant cultural center in the region, HOZO and its outstanding achievements after 3 editions are the result of strong investment decisions in Ho Chi Minh City's cultural industry development strategy for the period 2020-2030.

According to Donna McGowan, the aim is to introduce opportunities for collaboration and always welcome artists from both countries to connect and showcase their talents internationally. Funding that connects through culture not only creates meaningful artistic exchanges but also helps bring about deeper understanding, thereby enriching the global creative landscape.
