The day Alonso returns to Bernabeu is not far off. |
AS and Kicker report that Real Madrid will secure the signature of Xabi Alonso this summer, after the Spanish coach reached an agreement to terminate his contract early with Bayer Leverkusen.
The German club had previously agreed with Alonso that they would not make things difficult if the coach wanted to move to a bigger club immediately after the 2024/25 season. Real Madrid is expected to pay Leverkusen 2-3 million euros as compensation for the remaining year of Alonso's contract with the German club.
Last year, Bayer Leverkusen successfully extended Alonso's contract until 2026, but they also promised to let the coach leave if Real Madrid or Liverpool approached him. This move significantly saved Real Madrid money, as they are looking to invest heavily in their squad during the 2025 summer transfer window.
In fact, coach Alonso was contacted by all three of his former clubs, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich, in the summer of 2024. However, the Spanish coach rejected all offers to continue leading Leverkusen for at least another season.
During his playing career, Xabi Alonso played for Real Madrid for five years (2009-2014). With "Los Blancos," the former Spanish international won La Liga in 2011/12 and the Champions League in 2013/14.
With the Xabi Alonso deal nearing completion, Real Madrid are also ready to part ways with Carlo Ancelotti immediately after the 2024/25 season ends.
This would create an opportunity for the Italian strategist to lead the Brazilian national team. Therefore, it is highly likely that Coach Alonso will lead Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in June.
