Teach students to understand AI.

Yesterday morning, February 23rd, millions of students returned to school after a long Tet holiday to continue the new semester. Many students in Ho Chi Minh City, starting from elementary school, will be taught about artificial intelligence (AI), as the Artificial Intelligence Law will come into effect this March.

Thus, for the first time in the nation's history, a generation of students will grow up not only with books but also with AI. This is not just a technological change, but a turning point in civilization.

In the past, a nation's strength lay in its land, then in machinery, and finally in technology. Today, strength lies in intelligence and the ability to master AI. Without mastering AI, we are merely users. If we only use it, we will be dependent. And if we are dependent, we will lag behind. But if we master it, we can keep pace. And if we dare to innovate, we can lead the way.

The Law on Artificial Intelligence and the direction of the education sector not only open up opportunities but also set out requirements that must be ensured.

First, we must teach students to understand AI, not just to use it. Students shouldn't just know how to ask AI questions for answers, but they must learn what AI is, how it works, where it can be right and wrong, and when humans should be the final decision-makers. Students who only know how to use AI without understanding it will become a dependent generation. Only when they understand its essence can they truly master it.

Secondly, it is essential to protect students' data and privacy when incorporating AI into education. It's crucial to understand that every question a student asks can become data, and each piece of data can become part of larger systems. Therefore, schools must ensure the use of legitimate platforms. Students' personal information must be protected, preventing them from becoming unwitting data sources. Consequently, laws should not only protect technology but also people.

Third, teachers need to be trained before they are asked to teach students. There can be no AI education if teachers are outside of AI. Teachers don't need to become engineers, but they must become guides, showing students when to use AI and when not to. In this era, the role of the teacher is not diminishing; it is becoming more important than ever.

Fourth, integrate AI into education, but view it only as an assistant, not a replacement. AI can help write a paragraph, but it cannot replace the experience of writing down genuine thoughts. AI can provide a solution, but it cannot replace the joy of humans discovering solutions themselves. Teachers should teach students that AI should be used to expand their intelligence, not to paralyze it.

Fifth, ensure equal opportunities for all students. If AI is limited to cities, regional disparities will widen. But if implemented correctly, AI can bring the best knowledge to all regions.

Integrating AI into schools means that the quality of education is no longer limited by geography, and it also builds a foundation for today's generation to not only use technology but also create technology, not only keep up with the world but also contribute to the world.
