According to traditional medicine, earthworms have a salty taste and a cooling nature, with effects such as clearing heat, calming nerves, unblocking meridians, relieving asthma, and promoting diuresis. Earthworms are used in cases of high fever, muscle spasms, joint pain, numbness and paralysis of the limbs, stroke with cough and asthma due to lung heat, scanty urination, and high blood pressure.

Some things to keep in mind when using earthworms.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Triet, a pharmacist, because of its cooling properties, earthworm should not be used in cases of deficiency cold (yang deficiency causing external cold with symptoms such as cold hands and feet, pale complexion, weakness or fatigue, spontaneous sweating, etc.) without actual heat (fever, yellow tongue coating, painful urination, dry throat, thirst, etc.). It should also not be used by people allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicinal herb.

Earthworms live in the soil and may contain many harmful bacteria; therefore, they must be cleaned according to the processing procedures specified in the Pharmacopoeia before use. They should not be used without the prescription and advice of a healthcare professional.
