In the Irish presidential election held on October 24th, Catherine Connolly, an independent and left-wing candidate, won a landslide victory.
The vote count showed that she won more than 63% of the vote, surpassing her center-right opponent, former Secretary Heather Humphreys (with 29.5% of the vote), to become President Michael D. Higgins' successor for the next seven-year term.
In her victory speech at Dublin Castle on October 25, Connolly pledged to be a “president for all,” promoting diversity and becoming a “voice of peace .”
