In the presidential election in Ireland on October 24, Ms. Catherine Connolly - an independent candidate with a left-wing stance - won an overwhelming victory.
The vote count showed that she won more than 63% of the votes, surpassing her center-right opponent, former Secretary Heather Humphreys (with 29.5% of the votes), to become the successor to President Michael D. Higgins for the next 7-year term.
In a speech on October 25 at Dublin Castle after her victory, Ms Connolly pledged to be a “president for all”, promote diversity and be a “voice of peace ”.
