The film Dat rung phuong Nam was released on October 16. Although he is only a supporting character in the film, Uncle Ba Phi, played by Tran Thanh, has received the attention of the audience even before the film was released.

In particular, the scene where Uncle Ba Phi, played by Tran Thanh, "claims credit" for saving Vo Tong has caused even more controversy. Specifically, in the scene where he "talks nonsense" at Ba Tu Beo's bar, Uncle Ba Phi exaggerates the story of himself saving Vo Tong:

“That day I witnessed, the soldiers had just raised their guns, Wu Song roared, the sky thundered, the soldiers were so scared they peed their pants like a flood, where was the spirit to shoot? I saw Ba Phi at the right moment, grabbed the sickle and cut the noose.

Wu Song whistled, and from somewhere a herd of buffaloes rushed in and pushed the soldiers down. Then Wu Song's father jumped into the river and was carried away by the giant fish.

In fact, Uncle Ba Phi did not appear in the scene of the robbery of the execution ground, so there was no story of saving Wu Song. The fact that Uncle Ba Phi made such a statement made many people think that it went beyond being humorous and witty and became a claim for credit.

Tran Thanh's Uncle Ba Phi is causing controversy among the audience.

This detail is considered to be completely opposite to the generous and upright character of Uncle Ba Phi in the real-life prototype and in the TV series. Therefore, the actor received a lot of criticism from the audience because they thought he had ruined the image of Uncle Ba Phi - the pride of many generations of Southern people.

However, there are also some opinions supporting Tran Thanh in "renovating" his character. These people think that the movie version of Dat rung phuong nam is only inspired by the novel of the same name, so the characters will not need to be similar to the original.

These people believe that each person's approach is different, and that this is just a supporting character in the film, and there is no need to pay too much attention to it to avoid diluting the attention given to the film's overall content.

Tran Thanh wants to build his own image of Uncle Ba Phi.

Tran Thanh himself also shared that he will be creative to make his character Uncle Ba Phi more different. The actor said: At first, I was hesitant when the director invited me to play a classic role. However, I like this challenge because it stimulates creativity. I believe that my version is completely new, will not only come out, tell funny stories, and brag like the old version, but will have more roles. I hope to be loved by everyone through this role."

During the premiere of the film Southern Forest Land in Ho Chi Minh City, artist Mac Can - who was once "nailed" with the image of the character Uncle Ba Phi in the movie version also commented:

“Tran Thanh is still young and has his own creativity, I don’t know. Sometimes that’s excellent, so what? As for the face and body being too young, we have to try to look like Uncle Ba Phi. Because when an actor enters a movie, he has to look like the character.”
