On January 26th, the Dam Rong District Forest Management Unit ( Lam Dong province ) announced that it had initiated a criminal investigation into the crime of forest destruction occurring in a portion of Lot 12, Section 4, Lot 2, Section 5, Sub-area 189, within the forest area managed by the Serepok Protective Forest Management Board (located in Ro Men commune, Dam Rong district), following the discovery of a large area of forest destruction.
Specifically, based on intelligence gathered, authorities caught Giàng Văn Bằng (born in 1999, residing in Hamlet 5, Rô Men Commune, Đam Rông District) red-handed engaging in illegal deforestation in Sub-area 189. After inventory, authorities determined that 16,300 square meters (1.63 hectares) of forest had been destroyed. This is a bamboo forest, classified as a production forest. Following the discovery of the incident, the police and the People's Procuracy of Đam Rông District, in coordination with the forest management unit, conducted a site inspection and investigated the illegal deforestation case.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lam Dong province also requested the forest management unit to take measures to plant and restore forests immediately in the area that was recently destroyed, and not leave any land vacant to avoid encroachment and re-encroachment on forest land.
