Recognizing the reading needs of children during the summer, the Can Tho City Library regularly organizes the "Summer Fun Reading" program every year. This year, the program is for children aged 4-12 and will be held four times on Sundays in June and July 2026.

Ms. Ha Hong Ngoc, Deputy Director of Can Tho City Library, said: "In particular, the 'Summer Fun Reading' program in 2026 will be held simultaneously at three locations: Can Tho City Library, Vi Thanh branch, and Soc Trang branch, to serve a large number of children in the city. The program content has also been revamped, with themes such as 'Exploring the World of Books,' 'Knowledge and Talent,' 'Skills and Creativity,' and 'Connecting and Sharing.' Through this, children will be able to access and practice reading skills and experience handicraft activities, drawing based on books, and public speaking..."
What impressed many was that even when there were many children participating in the program, there were also quite a few parents sitting in attendance throughout. It wasn't simply about "waiting for their children to come home," but rather parents attentively watching their children play, read, draw, and even choosing and reading books together. One young mother read comic books with her twin daughters. Another young mother looked at pictures of animals with her preschool-aged son. And some fathers chose good books with their children to take home and read… That image was beautiful, slow-paced, and full of love in this digital age.
Walking around some bookstores in Ninh Kieu ward, Cai Khe ward, etc., you'll easily see parents, grandparents, and their children buying books, reading books, and sharing the joy of reading together.
Mr. Nguyen Chi Ngon (residing in Tan An ward, Can Tho city) brought his two grandchildren to Phuong Nam Bookstore in Can Tho to choose books together, sharing: “On weekends, I often take my grandchildren to the bookstore. They are very happy, and my wife and I are also happy. Sometimes their parents come along, the whole family goes.” Indeed, in modern times, a common worry for many parents is that during summer vacation, children will be engrossed in phones, TVs, and games. But when the whole family chooses books as a way to bond, that worry is greatly alleviated.
Of course, books aren't a "magic wand" that instantly elevates knowledge or strengthens family bonds. What's important is the love and care each family member shows for one another. Through visits to the library, bookstores, or even reading in their own homes, children find joy, grandparents and parents feel a sense of kinship, and the whole family shares happiness.
Some summers are memorable because of long trips, but others are simply memorable because of the image of grandparents, parents, and children reading together or going to the library. On this year's Vietnamese Family Day, June 28th, let's recall those peaceful moments so that each of us can further appreciate the value of family – where love is nurtured from the smallest things.
