The "Dachshund Open" race requires each four-legged contestant to participate with two owners. One person holds the dog at the starting line, before the other owner at the finish line waves their pet's favorite toy to motivate the four-legged athletes.
Lenz Reischl, a member of the organizing committee, said: "Each race will have four dogs participating. Owners can wave sausages or stuffed animals – anything that excites them. But dachshunds are playful dogs, so many will ignore those things, or turn around near the finish line."
Mareike Hatzen, Albai's owner, excitedly said: "Albai runs very fast, especially with his snake-shaped toy. So we thought no other dachshund could be faster than him and decided to let him participate."

Dachshunds are a very popular breed in Munich, and were even chosen as the mascot for the 1972 Olympic Games held there.
This is the second year the race has been held. Other dog breeds are also welcome at the event, but only as spectators.
