Take the lily out into the wind and rain.

Lilies, a high-end flower from the highlands, have traditionally been grown in greenhouses with special care. However, a large lily cultivation enterprise in the flower-growing region has been doing the opposite, bringing lilies outdoors.

Tuong Vy Flower Import-Export Co., Ltd., located in B'Nơr C residential area, Lac Duong town, Lac Duong district, is one of the companies that directly imports lily seeds for cultivation in Lam Dong province . The company has approximately 15 hectares of lily cultivation area in Lac Duong town, Lac Duong district. With over 15 years of experience in lily cultivation, Tuong Vy Flower once had a large area of greenhouses. In recent years, Tuong Vy Flower has been doing the opposite, moving lily cultivation outdoors.

Taking visitors on a tour of the large lily farm, featuring varieties such as Yelloween (fragrant yellow), Conca D'or (fluffy yellow), Robina (fluffy red), Manissa (upright fluffy yellow), and Indiana (fragrant red), Ms. Pham Thi Diem Trang, a company manager, explained that when Tường Vy Flower first started growing lilies in Lac Duong, they, like other flower companies, grew them in greenhouses. However, in recent years, recognizing the benefits of growing lilies outdoors, Tường Vy Flower's greenhouses have been almost completely dismantled, allowing the plants to grow naturally in the sun, wind, and dew of the highlands. Ms. Diem Trang commented: “Growing lilies in greenhouses results in fewer diseases and easier adjustments to irrigation and lighting. However, growing lilies outdoors yields better results for us, and currently, most of our flower cultivation is done outdoors.”

According to Ms. Diem Trang, the lilies grown outdoors by Tuong Vy Flower thrive just as well as those grown in greenhouses. With sunlight, dew, and rainwater, the plants have green leaves, sturdy stems, and, most importantly, very vibrant flowers. Outdoor-grown lilies have a very high blooming rate; even when brought to hot cities, the plants remain beautiful, don't wilt, don't die, and the buds bloom evenly, making them popular with customers. "We still use green netting to shade the plants when they are young. Once they reach the necessary height, we remove the netting, leaving them in natural sunlight, and they begin the flowering process," Ms. Diem Trang explained.

When growing lilies outdoors, the most important thing to pay attention to is bulb rot, especially during the rainy season in the highlands. To solve the drainage problem, Tuong Vy Flower has a very simple method: growing lilies in plastic trays. According to Ms. Trang, as a large flower business, the company sometimes imports up to 5 million bulbs per year. These bulbs are delivered by foreign partners in plastic trays with pre-mixed growing medium. Tuong Vy Flower uses the plastic trays, adds the growing medium, and plants the lilies in them. The rows of trays are arranged to ensure effective drainage, preventing waterlogging that can damage the bulbs. "Growing lilies in trays also helps save costs for the business. Each season, we only need to add more growing medium to the trays, treat them with yeast and biological agents, and we can continue growing the next crop, saving a lot of labor and growing medium costs," Ms. Diem Trang commented.

As one of Da Lat's largest lily cultivation businesses, Tuong Vy Flower directly imports bulbs from overseas partners. Therefore, the company is equipped with a standard cold storage system to keep the bulbs dormant in optimal conditions. After planting plans are finalized and the soil is prepared, the bulbs are removed from the cold storage and thawed, awaiting sprouting to continue their growth. Primarily serving domestic customers, Tuong Vy Flower supplies lilies to Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding areas. To meet customer demand, Tuong Vy Flower imports many new lily varieties for customers to familiarize themselves with. Among them is the Roselily, a new double-flowered lily variety. Roselily lacks stamens, resembling roses when in bloom, and has a milder fragrance than other lily varieties, making it a popular choice for lily lovers who are wary of strong scents. However, Tuong Vy Flower must cultivate the Roselily variety in greenhouses because, once enclosed in netting, the flowers are susceptible to waterlogging if left outdoors.

One of the reasons Tường Vy Flower is so appreciated by local flower growers is the company's willingness to donate pre-produced lily bulbs to them. With the goal of growing the most beautiful lilies, after harvesting, Tường Vy Flower gives the bulbs to the farmers. They simply pick up the bulbs from the farm and plant them to create F2 plants. Although the F2 plants are smaller and produce fewer flowers, they still attract a large number of customers in less demanding markets. This also significantly reduces the cost of purchasing bulbs, which accounts for a large portion of the investment in lily cultivation. This is a source of joy for the local flower farmers, who have always supported the vibrant colors of lilies.
