Don't let 'children give birth to children'.

The percentage of teenagers with basic knowledge about reproductive and sexual health has increased from 32% to 83% following the implementation of the project 'Improving Reproductive and Sexual Health for Teenagers in Yen Bai Province', reducing the risk of unintended pregnancies in this age group.

Students need knowledge about safe sex.

Today, March 12th, a workshop to share the results of the Project to Improve Reproductive and Sexual Health for Adolescents in Yen Bai Province was organized in Hanoi by Save the Children in collaboration with the Yen Bai health sector.

Sharing her thoughts on the sidelines of the workshop, Ms. Le Thi Hong Van, Director of the Yen Bai Provincial Department of Health, assessed that the project has brought about positive changes for the target groups. Previously, at the boarding high school, teachers were very worried about students engaging in early sexual relationships, unwanted pregnancies, dropping out of school, and early marriage, so they had to constantly monitor and guide them. After the project, the percentage of students with knowledge about reproductive health and safe sex has increased, which is an important condition for reducing the rate of unwanted pregnancies and early marriage.

The project will be implemented over 20 months (from July 2023 to March 2025) with activities aimed at raising awareness, improving behavior, and enhancing access to reproductive and sexual health services for adolescents, especially in remote areas and ethnic minority communities in Mu Cang Chai and Van Chan districts, Yen Bai province.

Following the project, the percentage of adolescents in the project implementation area with basic knowledge about adolescent reproductive and sexual health increased from 32% to 83%. The percentage of adolescents with knowledge of gender equality increased from 70% to 91%; the percentage of adolescents accepting the use of modern contraceptive methods increased from 63% to 82%. The percentage of adolescents with access to reproductive and sexual health care services increased from 24% to 88%.

Don't let "children give birth to children".

Assessing the issue, Mr. Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health (Ministry of Health), affirmed: "Education on reproductive and sexual health for adolescents is a very important issue for Vietnam in the current period. We have a responsibility to care for, support with knowledge, and provide friendly services for adolescents and young people. 'Don't let children give birth to children,' is a major concern in adolescent health issues."

According to Mr. Khoa, for adolescents and young adults, issues such as early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases have significant consequences that will greatly affect their future. This is especially true for girls, who may experience difficulty conceiving and infertility later in life. Currently, both boys and girls tend to experience early puberty, so reproductive health education interventions need to lower the age at which knowledge is provided, possibly starting from 11 years old.
