Students need knowledge about safe sex

Today, March 12, a workshop to share the results of the Project to Improve Reproductive and Sexual Health for Adolescents in Yen Bai province was organized by Save the Children in collaboration with the Yen Bai health sector in Hanoi.

Sharing on the sidelines of the workshop, Ms. Le Thi Hong Van, Director of the Department of Health of Yen Bai province, assessed that the project brought positive changes to the affected groups. Previously, at the boarding high school, teachers were very worried about students having sex early, getting pregnant unintentionally, dropping out of school, getting married early, so they had to always closely monitor and "manage" them. After the project, the rate of students with knowledge about reproductive health and safe sex has increased, which is an important condition to help reduce the rate of unwanted pregnancies and early marriages.

After the project, the proportion of adolescents in the project area with basic knowledge about adolescent sexual and reproductive health increased from 32% to 83%. The proportion of adolescents understanding gender equality increased from 70% to 91%; the proportion of adolescents accepting the use of modern contraceptive methods increased from 63% to 82%. The proportion of adolescents with access to sexual and reproductive health care services increased from 24% to 88%.

Don't let "children give birth to children"

"Education on reproductive and sexual health for adolescents is a very important issue for Vietnam at the present time. We have the responsibility to care, support knowledge as well as provide services that are friendly to adolescents and young people," said Mr. Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Mothers and Children ( Ministry of Health ). "Don't let children give birth to children", is a major concern in the issue of adolescent health.

According to Mr. Khoa, for adolescents and young people, things like early pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases... are consequences that will greatly affect their future. Especially for girls, when they grow up, it can lead to difficulty in having children and infertility. Currently, boys and girls tend to reach puberty early, so reproductive health education intervention needs to reduce the age of access to knowledge, possibly for children from 11 years old.
