As the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026 approaches, the atmosphere in the vegetable fields of Quang Dien, Dan Dien communes, Phong Quang ward, Huong An, Hoa Chau... becomes increasingly bustling. Taking advantage of the sunny days, people are busily tending to and harvesting vegetables to ensure timely supply for the Tet market.
In the villages of An Gia, Giang Dong, La Van Ha… the concentrated vegetable-growing areas of Quang Dien commune, farmers are busy harvesting vegetables to supply the market in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year).
According to statistics from the People's Committee of Quang Dien commune, the entire commune currently has nearly 150 hectares of various vegetables, of which water spinach alone accounts for about 72 hectares. Quang Dien is considered one of the largest vegetable growing areas in Hue City , supplying fresh vegetables to the market year-round. On the vast fields, the green of onions, coriander, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, sawtooth coriander, cinnamon, etc., stretches out, creating a vibrant picture of labor in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year). To increase income, many households also intercrop short-term crops such as cantaloupe and bitter melon; some households also grow chrysanthemums and marigolds to meet the needs of people during Tet.
The atmosphere of bustling work is also evident in the vegetable fields in the Thành Trung, Tây Thành, Phú Lương, Thanh Hà… residential areas of Hóa Châu ward.
Currently, Hoa Chau ward has about 70 hectares of clean vegetables, providing regular employment for more than 300 local workers. On average, each hectare of clean vegetables brings in revenue of 120 - 150 million VND/year; after deducting expenses, the profit reaches 50 - 60 million VND/ha.

| Locals are having a bumper crop of vegetables for Tet (Lunar New Year). |
In Huong An ward, after much effort, the locality has established a model for safe scallion production covering 16.5 hectares, meeting VietGAP standards and attracting more than 170 households. In the fields, scallions are intercropped with many other vegetables. During the Tet holiday season, farmers hardly have a day off; from land preparation, planting, caring for the plants to harvesting, everything is carried out urgently.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Kien, a vegetable farmer in Huong An ward, said that his family currently has nearly 1 hectare of land planted with scallions and is continuing to expand the area. "Compared to rice, the economic efficiency from scallions is significantly higher, with a yield of about 4.8 - 5 tons/hectare/year, bringing in hundreds of millions of dong/hectare/year," Mr. Kien shared.
However, according to vegetable growers, compared to the same period leading up to Tet in previous years, vegetable prices this year are significantly lower. After the floods, vegetable prices usually ranged from 15,000 to 20,000 VND/kg, but now they are only around 4,000 to 5,000 VND/kg. This is understandable because after the floods, the favorable sunny weather prompted many households to plant crops simultaneously to be ready for Tet, leading to a sharp increase in supply, while the main consumption market remains concentrated in traditional markets. The lack of distribution channels and stable supply contracts makes vegetable prices vulnerable to price fluctuations when supply exceeds demand.
Given this situation, to help vegetable growers stabilize their output and increase product value, local leaders need long-term solutions. In the short term, it is necessary to strengthen connections between vegetable growers and wholesale markets, supermarkets, collective kitchens, restaurants, and hotels in Hue City and surrounding areas to expand the consumer market.
According to Hoang Van Minh Chau, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Dien commune, the locality is connecting with several collective kitchens, restaurants, and supermarkets to find outlets for the farmers' vegetables. The commune also encourages people to participate in cooperatives and associations producing safe vegetables, aiming to build a brand of vegetables associated with traceability and ensuring food safety and hygiene. When products have a brand and are certified, the value of vegetables will increase, creating trust for consumers.
