Edin Dzeko wants to maintain his form to help Bosnia qualify for the 2026 World Cup. |
Schalke 04, a club in the German second division, has confirmed the signing of Dzeko from Fiorentina to strengthen their attack in the race for promotion. The contract covers the remaining 16 rounds of the season, and Dzeko will wear the number 10 shirt. The striker, born in 1986, will turn 40 in March.
"We've signed a striker who has played at the highest level. Schalke will benefit from Edin's leadership experience, his ability to hold up the ball, and his goal-scoring instinct," Sporting Director Youri Mulder affirmed.
For Dzeko, Schalke is not just a new destination, but also a springboard for his personal ambitions. He hopes to maintain his form and fitness to be called up to the Bosnia national team, as they prepare for the World Cup play-offs in March. Bosnia will face Wales before potentially taking on the winner of the Italy-Northern Ireland match.
Dzeko is currently the greatest goalscorer in Bosnia's history with 72 goals in a record 146 appearances. Continuing to play regularly in Germany is seen as key to maintaining his chances of participating in the biggest football tournament on the planet.
Schalke currently leads the Bundesliga 2 by four points over Elversberg and Darmstadt with the season just over halfway through. The Ruhr team's success is built on a solid defensive foundation, although their goal-scoring ability remains limited, even lagging behind some teams at the bottom of the table.
Dzeko is no stranger to German football. He shone brightly for Wolfsburg, playing a major role in their Bundesliga title win in 2010. After that, the striker went on to win titles with Manchester City (2012, 2014) and Inter Milan (2022, 2023).
