Inauguration ceremony of A Pa Chai Flagpole, Dien Bien province
In November 2023, A Pa Chai Flagpole was started to be built, with a total investment of 31 billion VND. The project is built on a mountain top with an altitude of 1,459m above sea level (belonging to Khoang La San mountain range, with coordinates 22º22'44" North latitude -102º10'35" East longitude). This location is about 1,387m from the border junction marker "Marker 0".
The total area of the flagpole is 407 square meters, including the surrounding walking path, the flag-raising yard, the landscaped flower beds and the center is the flagpole, symbolizing the solidarity of ethnic groups gathered around the sacred fire of the nation; from above, it is stylized like a Ban flower blooming in the mountains and forests of the Northwest.
The flagpole is 45.19m high; the total height of the flagpole after completion is +1,505.54m corresponding to the historical milestone of May 1954, marking the glorious victory of Dien Bien Phu. The size of the flag is 7.5x5m; the area is 37.5m2 associated with the historic victory day of Dien Bien Phu (May 7, 1954).
The body of the flagpole is shaped like an octagon, showing balance, solidity, and majesty, in accordance with the nature of the structure as a sacred flagpole of the Fatherland. The base of the flagpole is highlighted by 5 reliefs with images typical of the Northwest culture, ethnic motifs, according to 5 main themes:
Topic 1: The Legend of the Mother Gourd - a legend of the Khmu people (the legend of the formation of Vietnamese ethnic groups, including 19 ethnic groups living in Dien Bien province);
Topic 2: Cultural beliefs and festivals of ethnic groups. Including intangible cultural forms that have been recognized as national intangible cultural heritage;
Topic 3: Labor, production and traditional occupations. Some of which have been recognized as national intangible cultural heritage;
Topic 4: Folk songs, folk dances, folk games. Of which, the Khen Mong dance and the dance of the Khmu ethnic group have been recognized as national intangible cultural heritage;
Theme 5: Solidarity Xoe dance. In which Thai Xoe dance has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
On top of the flagpole is a stone relief with the theme of Uncle Ho with the ethnic groups of the Northwest. The path up to the flagpole consists of 519 steps (symbolizing the 19 ethnic groups of Dien Bien province) clinging to the natural terrain of the hillside.
A Pa Chai Flagpole is not only an architectural work of profound historical, cultural and political significance, but also a symbol affirming the sacred territorial sovereignty of the Fatherland.
The project contributes to helping Muong Nhe in particular and Dien Bien province in general effectively exploit potentials and advantages associated with preserving, maintaining and promoting the cultural identity of ethnic groups, historical relics and improving the ecological environment, improving the material and spiritual life of the people, maintaining political security, social order and safety and national border sovereignty.
