According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Latin American region in 2023 reached over $184.3 billion, a decrease of 9.9% compared to 2022.
This decline is due to a 14% and 23% drop in FDI inflows into the region's leading economies, Brazil and Mexico. However, the Central America and Caribbean region saw significant FDI growth in 2023, with Costa Rica recording a 28% increase.
According to ECLAC Executive Secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, FDI can help Latin America address challenges such as low-growth traps, instability, monopolies, inequality, social cohesion, and poor governance. Mr. Salazar-Xirinachs advised countries in the region to make greater efforts to sustain the effective development of FDI projects.
