Steel prices on the exchange.

Rebar futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for June 2025 delivery rose 50 yuan to 3,165 yuan per ton.

Iron ore futures prices were mixed, as traders weighed concerns about the outlook for Chinese steel demand following the country's latest trade data compared to lower global supply.

The most actively traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), DCIOcv1, traded 0.36% lower at 684 yuan ($96.12) per ton.

However, the benchmark October iron ore contract SZZFV4 on the Singapore exchange rose 1.52% to $92.0 per ton.

China's exports surged at their fastest pace in nearly a year and a half in August, suggesting manufacturers were rushing to fulfill orders ahead of tariffs from a large number of trading partners, while imports fell short amid weak domestic demand.

The mixed trade data highlights the challenge Beijing faces as policymakers try to boost overall growth without over-reliance on exports, especially as consumer spending is tightening.

ANZ analysts said in a note that goods imports into China were slightly seasonally weaker in August as processors grappled with sluggish economic activity. However, demand may be improving as industries ramp up activity ahead of winter in the north. Strong steel exports continue to offset some weaknesses in the steel sector, which is struggling with weak profit margins.

Customs data shows that imports of iron ore by top consumers in August fell 1.38% from July and 4.73% year-on-year, as falling steel prices and a gloomy demand outlook dampened buyer demand.

Meanwhile, iron ore shipments to global destinations from 19 ports and 16 mining companies in Australia and Brazil broke three-week gains, falling 10.8% from the previous week in the period from September 2 to 8, according to data from consulting firm Mysteel.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE showed mixed results, with DJMcv1 coking coal down 0.97%, while DCJcv1 coking coal up 0.28%.

Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange recorded gains. Rebar SRBcv1 rose about 0.7%, wire rod SWRcv1 rose 0.56%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 rose 0.45%, although stainless steel SHHSScv1 fell nearly 0.8%.
