The global commodities market just experienced a day of low liquidity as the US observed Labor Day.
At the close of trading on Monday, the metals market was relatively quiet with thin liquidity. For precious metals, as of 1:30 AM this morning (September 3rd), the price of silver fell 0.87% to $28.8 per ounce, and the price of platinum also lost 0.23% to $930.1 per ounce.
Precious metals experienced mixed movements amid uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook. Data released over the weekend showed that the pace of US inflation is slowing, as evidenced by the fact that the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) and Core PCE indices remained unchanged from the previous month, reaching 2.5% and 2.6% respectively in July. This could lead the Fed to cut rates by only 25 basis points at its September meeting, instead of the 50 basis point cut currently expected by investors.
Therefore, the market will continue to wait for the US non-farm payrolls report, to be released on Friday (September 6th), for clearer clues about the Fed's interest rate cut scenario.
