Having just harvested over 20 tons of whiteleg shrimp, reaching a size of 25 shrimp per kilogram and selling them at 250,000 VND per kilogram, Mr. Dang Van Bay from Thanh Phong commune, Vinh Long province, is very pleased. Mr. Bay shared that because he raised the shrimp using high-tech, multi-stage farming methods, the shrimp reached a larger and more uniform size, fetching a better price compared to traditional farming. Furthermore, the profit margin can reach over 50% (130,000 VND per kilogram) after deducting investment costs.
According to Mr. Dang Van Bay, there is currently a market demand for large-sized shrimp for export, but traditional farming methods are difficult to meet. Currently, Mr. Bay has converted 40 hectares of shrimp farming area to high-tech, multi-stage farming, earning over 20 billion VND in profit annually. The high purchase price allows farmers to invest in new shrimp farming techniques, resulting in greater economic efficiency.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Vu from Thanh Phuoc commune, Vinh Long province, the high purchase price of whiteleg shrimp has helped farmers achieve greater profits, allowing them to prepare for a more prosperous Tet holiday. Mr. Vu himself raises shrimp on 5 hectares, and due to traditional farming methods, the shrimp only reach a size of 50-60 shrimp per kilogram. Currently, the purchase price for this type of shrimp is 160,000-170,000 VND/kg, 40,000 VND/kg higher than in previous months. Mr. Vu recently harvested 6 tons of commercial shrimp, achieving a significantly higher profit than the previous season.
Mr. Nguyen Van Vu said that with this year's profits, he will soon convert a portion of his land to high-tech whiteleg shrimp farming because high-tech shrimp farming is 4-5 times more efficient than traditional methods. Although the initial investment cost is high, making it difficult for farmers to switch to high-tech shrimp farming, with the current stable purchase price of shrimp, farmers will have the opportunity to make the switch.
According to traders buying whiteleg shrimp in Vinh Long, the high price of whiteleg shrimp at the end of the year is largely due to companies increasing their purchases of raw materials for export. In addition, recent storms and floods in the Central region have hampered production, leading to a scarcity of supply. Currently, traders are looking to buy, but the supply is limited. It is predicted that shrimp prices may continue to rise sharply due to strong domestic market demand at the end of the year, especially for larger shrimp.
According to information from the Vinh Long Department of Agriculture and Environment, in 2025, the entire province will cultivate 113,280 hectares of shrimp and various types of fish, exceeding the plan by 2.42%, an increase of 0.42% compared to the same period last year, and harvesting over 690,000 tons. Of this, brackish and saltwater farming will account for over 98,500 hectares, exceeding the plan by 2.34%. Notably, the multi-stage high-tech shrimp farming model is developing strongly, reaching over 7,800 hectares, 1,682 hectares higher than the same period last year. The Vinh Long provincial agricultural sector continues to encourage farmers to apply high-tech shrimp farming to increase income and open up better economic development opportunities.
The Department of Agriculture in Vinh Long province has proactively piloted and replicated intensive and super-intensive shrimp farming models applying advanced technology, especially multi-stage shrimp farming processes in net houses or ponds lined with tarpaulin… to introduce and encourage people to switch to and expand shrimp farming models with closed-loop processes, environmental management using automated systems, and ensuring biosafety, thereby increasing productivity, reducing disease risks, and achieving stable profits.
