Many people are hesitant to have children born in the year of the Snake for various reasons, but in reality, those born in the year of the Snake also have many advantages and have produced outstanding individuals around the world .
The Year of the Snake (2025) begins on January 29th and ends on February 16th, 2026.
Whether it's superstition or not, many parents in China don't particularly favor the Year of the Snake for having children. Instead, the most preferred year is the Year of the Dragon, according to the South China Morning Post .
The story of two consecutive years
The reason is that those born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to possess extraordinary abilities, inheriting the luck and regal nature of the dragon in legend.
As a result, the number of births in China during the Year of the Dragon was higher than in all the other years of the 12 zodiac signs.
Conversely, many couples in this country do not prefer having children in the Year of the Snake because they believe it is not a very lucky year, and that if it is a girl, she may have difficulties in her love life.
According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, the number of births in the country decreased by 1.97 million in the most recent Year of the Snake (2013) compared to the Year of the Dragon (2012). In Hong Kong, the number of births in 2013 was nearly 30,000 lower than the previous year, according to official figures from the special administrative region's government.
Many social media users in China, such as Weibo, share opinions such as the fact that sons born in the year of the Snake are often called "debt collectors," while daughters tend to have difficult love lives.
Some even argue that those born in the year of the Snake not only fail to bring good fortune but instead plunge their families into hardship, particularly in financial matters.
Why worry about those born in the year of the Snake?
In Chinese culture, snakes are often associated with danger. In many of the country's legends and folk tales, snakes are portrayed as villains.
This directly influences people's views on the Year of the Snake, especially regarding childbirth, as everyone wants their children to be born under a zodiac sign considered auspicious.
"Although I also want to have children as soon as possible, I still want to avoid having a child in the Year of the Snake," the South China Morning Post quoted a Weibo user as saying.
"The year of the Snake doesn't sound as prestigious as the year of the Dragon and doesn't symbolize good fortune like the year of the Horse. I'm afraid my child (if born in the year of the Snake) will be unlucky," this person said.
American singer Taylor Swift performs on stage at Miami Gardens, Florida, on October 18, 2024.
However, not everyone agrees with this opinion. One user on Xiaohongshu, a platform similar to Instagram in mainland China, argues that the snake symbolizes intelligence and wisdom. People born in the Year of the Snake are often wise, insightful, and ambitious.
In fact, many people born in the Year of the Snake achieve success far beyond the average person. Notable figures born in the Year of the Snake include American superstar Taylor Swift (born in 1989), and even the General Secretary and President of China, Xi Jinping (born in 1953), is another famous figure born in the Year of the Snake.
Furthermore, due to the low birth rate in the Year of the Snake, which many people disapprove of, some believe that children born in this year, specifically 2025, will face less competition from their peers and have easier access to educational resources.
It is also important to note that a child's future depends on the education they receive from their parents and family, and their own efforts as they grow up, rather than primarily relying on their zodiac sign or year of birth to determine their destiny.
