Samsung Electronics CEO Han Jong-Hee has passed away at the age of 63.
Reuters quoted a Samsung spokesperson confirming by phone that Han Jong-hee passed away on March 25.
According to Chosun Biz, Han Jong-hee suffered cardiac arrest after his daughter's wedding on March 22nd. Despite being rushed to Seoul Samsung Hospital, he did not survive. Han was scheduled to speak at a major Samsung event on March 26th, but the company announced a schedule change on March 24th, replacing him with someone else.
"We pray for the soul of the deceased, who contributed 37 years to the company. He led the TV division to become the world's number one, and did his best as head of the TV and home electronics division, even when facing many difficulties," Chosun Biz quoted an internal Samsung Electronics announcement.
The funeral of Han Jong-hee is scheduled to take place on March 27th.
In his leadership role, Han Jong-hee oversaw the mobile device business, previously held by Koh Dong-jin, and the consumer electronics business, formerly headed by Hyun-Suk Kim. Additionally, he served as co-CEO of Samsung Electronics, alongside Jun Young-hyun, overseeing the chip business of South Korea's largest conglomerate.
Before his death, Han Jong-hee attended the annual general meeting on March 19 in Suwon, South Korea, where he acknowledged to shareholders that Samsung's technological competitiveness had declined recently.
To improve the situation, he pledged that the company would pursue "meaningful achievements" through mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in 2025 to drive recovery and growth.
"M&A in the semiconductor sector is facing difficulties due to regulations and national interests, but we are determined to achieve concrete results this year," said Han.
In light of this situation, Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong sent an urgent message to thousands of senior executives within the corporation.
He emphasized that Samsung is facing a life-or-death challenge: either change to survive or face failure.
In the video, Chairman Lee emphasized: "Samsung is facing a life-or-death situation. We need to deeply reassess ourselves from the highest level. We must invest in the future, even if it means sacrificing short-term profits."
