(NLĐO) - For many years, the image of the banyan tree, the riverside, the village courtyard, the village well... has been deeply ingrained in the consciousness and memories of every villager.

In the modern era, all the beloved and familiar images of village wells are being preserved, protected, and promoted by many local people more than ever before.

The Dong well in Yen Xa village, Hung Dong ward, Vinh City, is hundreds of years old and has recently been restored.

For the people of Nghe An province, for generations, the village well has been the main source of water serving the daily lives of the villagers, providing cool, clean water for cooking, bathing, and washing clothes. The village well is also a place where young men and women meet, date, and eventually get married. Furthermore, the village well is also where the "dragon veins" of each village converge, and these energy sources have nourished generations of people...

In Hung Dong ward, Vinh City, Nghe An province, for generations, the people here have preserved three village wells. The existence of these "treasures of the village" has contributed to preserving a bit of rural charm amidst the modern city. These are the Dong well in Yen Xa village, the Trung Thuan village well, and the Yen Hoa village well.

Mr. Nguyen Van Cau, residing in Hung Dong commune, Vinh City, shared: "In the old days, there was no piped water. Hundreds of households in the entire village went to the Dong well in Yen Xa village every day to fetch water. On hot summer afternoons, the children in the neighborhood would gather at the village well to draw water for bathing and playing. On moonlit nights, young men and women would meet up to carry water. Many couples in the neighborhood became husband and wife thanks to meeting, getting acquainted, and dating by the Yen Xa village well."

Originating from the shared use of a common water source, village wells have for generations served as a connecting thread, uniting villagers and creating a close-knit community. These wells have become deeply ingrained in the spiritual life of the villages, becoming an indispensable part of every rural community. Currently, in many localities in Nghe An province, the preservation and promotion of the historical value of these village wells are being prioritized by the people and authorities.

Village wells, repositories of rural charm amidst modern, bustling cities.

Many village wells in rural areas have been restored and rebuilt, becoming repositories of rural charm amidst modern life. One such example is the Vụng well in Trung Phúc Cường commune (Nam Đàn district), one of the largest, most beautiful, and centuries-old village wells that has recently been restored.

The village well in Trung Hau hamlet, Dien Hoa commune, Dien Chau district, was built by Dr. Thai Doan Nguyen in the mid-18th century when he came here to establish the hamlet, and it remains intact today. Other examples include the Trot Quan well in Ngoc Dinh hamlet, Kim Lien commune; the Van Phuc village well in Thinh Son commune, Do Luong district; the Da Van village well in Xuan Son commune, Do Luong district; and the Bong well in Tuong Lai hamlet, Phu Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district…

"The banyan tree, the well, the village communal house" are familiar images of the old Vietnamese countryside. Nowadays, despite many changes in modern life, many bustling residential areas still preserve ancient village wells, evoking memories of a bygone community living space. These village wells are contributing to preserving the soul of the countryside.
