The Dong well in Yen Xa village, Hung Dong ward, Vinh City, is hundreds of years old and has recently been restored.

For the people of Nghe An province, for generations, the village well has been the main source of water serving the daily lives of the villagers, providing cool, clean water for cooking, bathing, and washing clothes. The village well is also a place where young men and women meet, date, and eventually get married. Furthermore, the village well is also where the "dragon veins" of each village converge, and these energy sources have nourished generations of people...

Forty-five years, a period long enough for youthful heads to be tinged with gray, long enough for the dirt roads of yesteryear to transform into bustling cities, and long enough for those who once called each other "schoolmates" to have lived almost a lifetime. But strangely, some memories refuse to grow old: Just meeting again, a longer-than-usual handshake, a glance recognizing each other amidst a crowd of older people, and an entire realm of youth suddenly awakens – as vivid as if it were yesterday.

In Hung Dong ward, Vinh City, Nghe An province, for generations, the people here have preserved three village wells. The existence of these "treasures of the village" has contributed to preserving a bit of rural charm amidst the modern city. These are the Dong well in Yen Xa village, the Trung Thuan village well, and the Yen Hoa village well.

Mr. Nguyen Van Cau, residing in Hung Dong commune, Vinh City, shared: "In the old days, there was no piped water. Hundreds of households in the entire village went to the Dong well in Yen Xa village every day to fetch water. On hot summer afternoons, the children in the neighborhood would gather at the village well to draw water for bathing and playing. On moonlit nights, young men and women would meet up to carry water. Many couples in the neighborhood became husband and wife thanks to meeting, getting acquainted, and dating by the Yen Xa village well."

Originating from the shared use of a common water source, village wells have for generations served as a connecting thread, uniting villagers and creating a close-knit community. These wells have become deeply ingrained in the spiritual life of the villages, becoming an indispensable part of every rural community. Currently, in many localities in Nghe An province, the preservation and promotion of the historical value of these village wells are being prioritized by the people and authorities.
