Manchester United's attack is playing terribly. |
When Ruben Amorim took over as manager at Manchester United in November, hopes for a major overhaul were high. However, so far, what has happened on the pitch has only added to the disappointment of the Red Devils fans.
One of the biggest problems this team is facing is its weak attack, and the name being criticized the most is striker Rasmus Hojlund.
From hope to disappointment
Since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag, Manchester United has yet to regain its consistent form. Despite having talented attacking stars, the team continues to struggle with scoring goals.
The 0-1 defeat to Wolves in the 33rd round of the Premier League on April 20th was their eighth home defeat of the season, a dismal record the club would rather not have. This is even more worrying considering Manchester United have only scored 38 goals in 33 Premier League matches this season, significantly fewer than mid-table teams.
The 2024/25 season turned into a long nightmare for Manchester United, and it's undeniable that the biggest reason was their goal-scoring ability. The team's strikers missed far too many golden opportunities, most notably Rasmus Hojlund, the expensive £72 million signing who was expected to be a "killer" in attack.
Hojlund was a name Manchester United had high hopes for when they signed him from Atalanta. With his impressive height and excellent movement, Hojlund was expected to be the perfect replacement for the older stars. However, so far, the Danish striker has failed to live up to those expectations.
Despite some notable performances early in the season, particularly his run of 5 goals in 4 games under Amorim, Hojlund has failed to maintain the necessary consistency. One of his most apparent weaknesses is his lack of confidence in crucial situations.
Hojlund has been a disappointment at MU. |
The match against Wolves is a prime example, where Hojlund failed to capitalize on a perfect pass from Alejandro Garnacho, despite being less than a meter from goal. Former England striker Alan Shearer, on the Match of the Day 2 program, did not hesitate to criticize Hojlund's performance.
"I see a player who is hurting. Hojlund is not ready to shoulder the responsibility of leading the attack at Manchester United. He lacks confidence and doesn't show the necessary decisiveness," Shearer said.
These comments are not without merit, considering Hojlund's lack of sharpness in scoring goals. The opportunities he missed in important matches only added to the disappointment of the expectations placed upon him.
Amorim and the attacking dilemma
Despite the immense pressure Hojlund is under, Amorim insists the problem isn't solely his. The Portuguese strategist stated: "We can't blame a single player. This is a team problem, not just Hojlund's. We need to improve the goal-scoring ability of all our players, not just one."
The truth is, Manchester United didn't lack chances in their matches, but missing so many opportunities clearly had a significant impact on the final result. Excluding the bottom three clubs, only Everton and West Ham scored fewer goals than MU, and this is unacceptable for a big club like Manchester United. Not only Hojlund, but also stars like Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho failed to show their composure in crucial situations.
Amorim will need new players for MU's attack. |
With their Premier League hopes virtually dashed, Manchester United are left with only one way to salvage the season: the Europa League. This is their last chance to win a major trophy and relieve the immense pressure on manager Amorim.
Their opponent in the semi-finals will be Athletic Bilbao, a team with a rich tradition and by no means easy to beat. A victory in this competition would bring some joy to MU and salvage what would have been a disappointing season.
However, progressing further in the Europa League requires a major shift in the team's playing style. Amorim needs to find a way to help the players regain their confidence and improve their goal-scoring ability. Furthermore, the inability to maintain consistency throughout this season will present a difficult challenge for him in rebuilding a strong and balanced squad.
Although this season is almost over with a string of defeats, it's crucial that Manchester United find a way to lift the team's spirits. They can't continue losing at home, nor can they continue playing without scoring goals. The future of the "Red Devils" depends heavily on finding a way out of this crisis.
Amorim doesn't have much time to find the answer. The Europa League matches will be United's last chance to regain confidence and reassert their position in Europe. Otherwise, this season will be a complete failure for a team that has always set high goals.
