Actions to bring Oc Eo culture to the world stage.

The Oc Eo cultural relic site was classified as a Special National Relic by the Prime Minister in 2012. In 2013, the Provincial People's Committee decided to establish the Oc Eo Cultural Relic Management Board. Currently, the preservation of the relic site is carried out rigorously by the management board's team of specialists, with the participation and advice of Vietnamese and international experts, ensuring that artifacts and traces of the Oc Eo culture are preserved in the best possible condition.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Trung Ho affirmed that Oc Eo culture is an extremely valuable heritage, a source of pride not only for An Giang but also for all of Vietnam. Preserving and promoting the value of this heritage is not only a responsibility but also a mandate from history.

Enhancing the value of heritage

The Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board places special emphasis on promoting foreign relations and international cooperation in the field of heritage. Cooperation with numerous international scientific organizations from countries such as South Korea, France, and India opens up opportunities to exchange experiences, access advanced conservation technologies, and conduct more in-depth research into this mysterious culture.

One of the significant milestones in promoting the value of the heritage was the inauguration and operation of the Oc Eo Culture Exhibition House in 2016. This is where thousands of valuable artifacts are preserved and displayed, closely linked to the management, collection, preservation, and promotion of the value of Oc Eo cultural artifact collections in An Giang province. Currently, the exhibition house approximately 15,000 original artifacts, groups of artifacts, and specimens, along with 3,006 artifact catalogs and millions of artifact samples excavated and archaeologically studied by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences under a project from 2017 to 2020. Notably, the exhibition is currently managing four national treasures: the head of the Linh Son Bac Buddha statue, the burial jar from Cay Tram mound, the relief of the Linh Son Bac Buddha, and the Nandin bull ring.

Besides domestic exhibitions, international exhibitions are organized to promote Oc Eo cultural artifacts abroad. From 2019 to 2020, the organization held two international exhibitions at the Seoul Baekje Museum and the Institute for Maritime Cultural Heritage Research in South Korea, showcasing 12,715 original artifacts of the Oc Eo culture, attracting tens of thousands of international visitors. This not only serves as a cultural bridge but also provides an opportunity to affirm the position of the Oc Eo cultural heritage on the world heritage map.

Accelerating towards the goal of World Heritage status.

An Giang 's top priority currently is successfully building a World Heritage dossier for the Oc Eo - Ba The archaeological site. To achieve this goal, the main bidding packages are being implemented urgently. By June 21, 2025, bidding package No. 5 on zoning and boundary marking for protection had been 100% completed and accepted, a significant step in determining the boundaries and protecting the site. Bidding package No. 3 on preparing the nomination dossier and management plan reached 26%, while bidding package No. 4 on communication and promotion reached 10%. Despite these achievements, the overall progress still needs to be accelerated to meet the deadline.

During a field survey and direct working session with the Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Trung Ho issued specific and decisive directives, including requesting the management board and relevant departments to reorganize the personnel of the steering committee and establish a provincial executive board to strengthen direct and continuous guidance and management of the task of building the world heritage dossier. Mr. Le Trung Ho requested the Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board and related units to closely coordinate with contractors and accelerate the progress of the remaining packages, especially package number 3 (preparation of nomination dossier and management plan) and package number 4 (communication and promotion). These two packages are crucial in completing the dossier and creating the necessary media impact.

The Department of Culture and Sports and the Department of Tourism advised the Provincial People's Committee to send a document requesting the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences to continue developing a project to organize, create scientific dossiers, and preserve the artifacts and specimens excavated during the 2017-2020 period. This is an urgent task to systematize documentation and ensure the long-term value of the heritage, serving in-depth research and the development of a world heritage dossier. The Project Management Board and the Department of Construction, in coordination with the Oc Eo Cultural Relics Management Board, are urgently implementing the construction of shelters at the excavated sites to protect artifacts and better serve research and tourism.
