Blood given, life remains
The Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center of Hue Central Hospital supplies blood to 10 hospitals in Hue City and neighboring provinces and cities. On average, each month, the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center of Hue Central Hospital needs to receive about 4,500 units of blood to supply to hospitals.
However, in June 2025, the amount of blood collected was only nearly 2,700 units, and by July 10, only about 800 units of blood were collected. The prolonged blood shortage is threatening to disrupt treatment, especially for emergency cases, chronically ill patients, and high-risk pregnant women.
Dr. Hoang Thi Lan Huong, Deputy Director of Hue Central Hospital, informed that the main source of voluntary blood and platelet donation has decreased due to students returning home for summer vacation or entering exams. Meanwhile, the demand for blood and platelets at hospitals remains high to serve emergency and treatment work.
Faced with this situation, the Party Committee and Board of Directors of Hue Central Hospital directed the Trade Union and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to coordinate with the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center to launch the program “White Blouse - Pink Heart”. This is a practical activity demonstrating the spirit of compassion and responsibility of doctors - those who wear white blouses.
The program “White Blouse - Pink Heart” took place in mid-July, attracting more than 350 doctors and medical staff of Hue Central Hospital to directly participate in donating 400 units of blood and platelets to save patients. Among them, many doctors and medical staff have donated blood 5, 10, 15 times. Doctor Nguyen Van Anh alone donated blood 50 times; technician Do Van Minh donated blood 40 times...
Doctor Hoang Thi Lan Huong said that donating blood to save lives has become a beautiful act, a regular activity of the staff, doctors and nurses of Hue Central Hospital. Many doctors have donated blood dozens of times and are ready to become a "living blood bank" to promptly treat and support patients to overcome the line between life and death. "With the message "A drop of blood given - A life left behind", the staff and civil servants of Hue Central Hospital all hope to donate their red blood to the blood bank, promptly serving the need for blood and quality blood products for treatment and emergency care of patients.
Through that, it evokes the noble gesture of a physician towards the community, as the famous physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac once taught: "There is no profession more humane than saving people...", Dr. Hoang Thi Lan Huong shared.
The silent heroes
Every Sunday morning, members of the Huong Thuy Platelet Donation Club (Hue City) meet at the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center of Hue Central Hospital. Everyone gently enters the donation room, each person donates a unit of platelets, a part of living blood to help people in need overcome critical conditions.
Ms. Huynh Ngoc Trang, Head of the Huong Thuy Platelet Donation Club, said that from 10 initial members in 2020, the club has now gathered 42 people, operating regularly for more than 4 years. Unlike whole blood donation, platelet donation requires more time and higher techniques, so donors must ensure good health and do it regularly. When they first started, everyone was hesitant. But after a few donations, everyone felt their health was stable and they have been confident and committed to it until today.
“Currently, members of the Huong Thuy Platelet Donation Club not only donate platelets regularly every week to supplement the platelet reserve at the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center of Hue Central Hospital, but each member is also a “living blood bank”, ready to donate platelets to save patients between life and death at any time. There are many members who are working, and when they hear that a patient needs platelets urgently, they immediately come to donate without hesitation,” said Ms. Trang.
Huong Thuy Platelet Donation Club also joins hands to organize many other humanitarian activities such as: visiting cancer patients, giving gifts to the poor at the hospital, organizing propaganda to raise awareness about platelet donation in the community... Ms. Le Thi Hien, President of Hue City Red Cross Society, said that Huong Thuy Platelet Donation Club is a very valuable model. The members of the Club do the most practical things. In critical cases, the members of the Club are truly an important support for the health sector.
The members of the Huong Thuy Platelet Donation Club come and then quietly walk out of the hospital after each donation, but the platelet units they give have contributed to keeping a patient's life between life and death. And thus, they become silent heroes in the work of saving lives in the ancient capital of Hue.
“The Huong Thuy Platelet Donation Club model has special value in the current context, when public awareness of platelet donation is still limited. This is a club that has maintained stable operations for many years. We are looking for ways to expand this model, because having another group like this means more chances of survival for patients,” said Ms. Le Thi Hien, President of the Hue City Red Cross Society.
