Coventry's triumphant run has officially come to an end. |
In the early morning of December 10, in round 20 of the English First Division (Championship), Coventry City was held to a 1-1 draw by host Preston North End, thereby continuing to let their opponents close the gap.
Coventry City's disappointing draw comes just days after a heavy 0-3 defeat to Ipswich Town. Coventry City had been 10 points clear at the top of the Championship table, but two disappointing results in rounds 19 and 20 have reduced the gap between them and their pursuers.
Middlesbrough, the second-placed team, took advantage of the opportunity to narrow the gap to 5 points when they beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 in round 20. Although still firmly in the lead, Coventry City lost some of the big advantage they had built up before.
With the Championship season being extended (up to 46 rounds), it is clear that the initial "honeymoon" period for coach Lampard and his students seems to be over. Under Lampard's leadership, Coventry have played beautiful and effective football since the beginning of the season. They have the best attack in the league (51 goals in 20 games), but have shown signs of decline recently.
In recent years, the founding team of the Premier League has made it to the promotion play-offs, but has failed in the decisive matches. The West Midlands club was relegated in the 2000/01 season and has not been able to return to the Premier League since.
