Coventry's triumphant run has officially come to an end. |
In the early hours of December 10th, in the 20th round of the English Championship, Coventry City were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts Preston North End, allowing their rivals to further close the gap.
Coventry City's disappointing draw came just days after their heavy 0-3 defeat to Ipswich Town. Coventry City had previously held a 10-point lead at the top of the Championship table, but two forgettable results in rounds 19 and 20 saw the gap between them and their pursuers narrow.
Middlesbrough, who were second in the table, took advantage of the opportunity to narrow the gap to five points by beating Charlton Athletic 2-1 in round 20. While still firmly in first place, Coventry City lost some of the significant advantage they had built up earlier.
With the Championship season being so long (up to 46 rounds), it's clear that the initial "honeymoon period" for manager Lampard and his players seems to be over. Under Lampard's leadership, Coventry played attractive and effective football from the start of the season. They boasted the best attack in the league (51 goals in 20 matches), but have shown signs of decline recently.
