Recently, he was selected by the local government to propose the Prime Minister to award a certificate of merit for his outstanding achievements in the emulation movement "For the poor - leaving no one behind", period 2021-2025.
Like many ethnic minority people in the western region of Quang Tri, Ho Ma was born into a large family whose economy depended entirely on slash-and-burn farming. When he reached the age of marriage and moved out, he and his wife began a new life with many difficulties, being poor or near-poor for many years.
Realizing that his hometown has great potential for agricultural development, Mr. Ma determined to research through books, newspapers, and other models in the region and actively participate in local science and technology training courses. He decided to invest in sustainable Catimo coffee trees.
Through the credit capital of associations and unions, he borrowed 100 million VND to invest in replanting coffee trees. On the land left by his parents, he reclaimed more than 1 hectare to plant more than 6,000 new Catimo coffee trees, and at the same time took care of the coffee area that had been abandoned for a long time due to old age and low productivity.
To make full use of the family's farmland, especially the rather arid areas, seeing that jackfruit coffee is drought-resistant, requires little care, and has stable prices, the couple continued to invest in growing jackfruit coffee with more than 1,000 trees.
With the motto of taking short-term to support long-term and gradually building a multi-crop, multi-animal economic model, his family planted 1 more hectare of cassava and raised cattle. With support from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction in early 2023 with 2 breeding cows worth 30 million VND, his family focused on taking care of them to gradually develop the herd, while also raising goats, the total herd sometimes reaching nearly 30 heads.
Mr. Ho Ma said: “Although we encountered many difficulties in the initial stages of economic development, we realized the potential of the land and suitable weather, so we boldly borrowed capital to develop a comprehensive economic model. From this result, we gradually invested to expand production development in the direction of multi-crop, multi-animal, in which coffee is the main crop, determined to rise up to become rich legitimately in our own village.”
Thanks to the application of scientific and technical knowledge in cultivation and animal husbandry, the diligence in researching, learning and working hard in production, after more than 5 years of implementation, the comprehensive economic model of Mr. Ma's family has initially brought positive results. Crops and livestock grow well, without disease. Catimo coffee has a fairly high yield, each harvest yields over 20 tons of fresh fruit; jackfruit coffee also grows well, promising to bring a significant source of income to the family.
The herd of cows and goats gradually increased. On average, after deducting expenses, his family earns more than 200 million VND per year. In addition, he takes advantage of his free time to build local houses and, together with his wife, maintains the traditional weaving profession of his people to increase the family's income. In 2024, his family officially escaped poverty, built a new, spacious house worth nearly 400 million VND, bought a motorbike, a television and other basic household items, and provided their children with a full education.
In addition to his efforts to overcome difficulties and escape poverty sustainably through the comprehensive economic model, he also actively participates in the work of the residential group; regularly encourages people to comply with all policies of the Party, policies and laws of the State, contributing to protecting order and security, maintaining a green, clean and beautiful environment; at the same time, supporting and helping neighbors when facing difficulties, creating solidarity, friendliness and sincerity.
