Taking advantage of favorable conditions such as rivers, streams, lakes, and dams, in recent years, many households and cooperatives in the province have proactively explored, learned, and invested in developing cage fish farming models. Along with this, relevant levels and sectors have proactively implemented many solutions to support development.
Established in 2021, the Cuong Hung Ecological Agricultural Cooperative in Trang Dinh commune operates in the service sector and cage fish farming. Mr. Ly Viet Cuong, the cooperative's director, stated: Recognizing the favorable water conditions at the Thac Xang hydroelectric dam, the cooperative invested in 12 fish cages in 2023. Along with leveraging its own resources, the cooperative has received support from various levels and sectors in the form of fingerlings, fish feed, disease prevention medicine, and care techniques to maintain and develop the 12 cages. Currently, the cooperative's catfish reach a weight of 2-6 kg per fish. Based on market prices, each cage yields a profit of over 10 million VND per year.
Similarly, with their own capital and government support, Mr. Le Van Duong's family in Ban Quyen village, Na Duong commune, has developed 9 fish cages (including 7 cages of snakehead fish supported by the government and 2 cages of other fish species invested in by the family). Mr. Duong said: "Taking advantage of the water surface at Phai Sen dam, Na Duong commune, in 2025, my family received support from the government in the form of nearly 2,000 snakehead fish fingerlings, along with feed and disease prevention medicine... To date, the snakehead fish have grown and developed well, with each fish weighing nearly 1.4 kg. From there, the cage fish farming model is gradually becoming an important source of livelihood for economic development."
Along with the cases mentioned above, during the period 2021-2025, thanks to state investment resources and the proactive development of local resources by people and cooperatives, the cage fish farming model in the province has made rapid progress. Mr. Tran Van Ngan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, said: The unit has implemented support in terms of resources, transferred technical processes for cage fish farming towards food safety and hygiene, VietGAP, and linked production of goods along the value chain, associated with brand building and environmental protection.
Specifically, during the period 2021-2025, the unit implemented a model for developing cage fish farming on a scale of 190 cages (40 m3/cage) with 44 households and 1 cooperative participating, with support including breeding stock, feed, disease prevention medicine, and technical assistance; the average profit reached 10.2 million VND/cage after 1 year of farming.
With support from agricultural extension programs and other assistance programs, the province now has approximately 600 fish cages, an increase of 80 cages compared to 2021. Alongside the increase in quantity, households and cooperatives have focused on promoting the application of science and technology, introducing suitable fish species for farming to improve productivity, quality, and value of cage-farmed fish products.
Despite the achievements, the development of cage fish farming in the province still faces some difficulties, such as an unstable market for the products; damage caused by rain and storms to some fish cages; and some cases of cage fish farming not complying with regulations.
In the coming period, the province will continue to focus on directing the development of agriculture in general, including maintaining and developing the cage fish farming model. To overcome difficulties and further improve the efficiency of cage fish farming, in the coming time, relevant levels and sectors will continue to implement measures to accompany and support cage fish farmers. This includes continuing to promote propaganda and training on the transfer of care techniques; supporting brand building and developing markets for product consumption; and integrating resources to support cage fish farmers…
With the results achieved and the solutions that have been and are being implemented, it is believed that the cage fish farming model in the province will continue to improve in both quantity and quality. This will increase the income of cage fish farmers in the province.
