According to the joint statement, the suspect was arrested on June 9 after authorities received information from international security partners.
The investigation revealed that in the months prior to his arrest, this individual was believed to have been in contact with people acting on behalf of Iranian intelligence agencies and carried out various tasks such as taking photographs and documenting locations considered sensitive in Israel. Each task was paid between a few tens and a few hundred dollars.
Authorities said that after completing the investigation, the prosecution submitted the indictment statement – a legal procedure before officially issuing the charges. It is expected that in the coming days, the prosecutor's office will submit the charges and request the court to continue detaining the suspect during the trial.
According to Israeli officials, the incident is part of a series of investigations into Iranian intelligence activities that have been uncovered recently. Inspector Amichai Panta of the Jerusalem Regional Police's central investigation unit said that numerous suspects accused of spying for Iran have been discovered in recent months, some of whom are believed to have operated during conflict.
Shin Bet's 2025 summary report shows that the agency prosecuted 25 Israeli citizens and foreigners residing in Israel in cases related to espionage for Iran, and thwarted 120 suspected cases involving Tehran's intelligence network.
According to Shin Bet, the incidents typically begin with suspects being approached via social media or messaging apps, then paid to perform simple tasks before gradually moving on to collecting more sensitive information.
