Italy has become the first country in the world to ban the production, sale and import of lab-grown meat - meat produced by growing animal cells in a laboratory rather than through animal slaughter.
The ban also covers the use of words referring to traditional meat products to market plant-based meat substitutes. Violators of the ban could be fined up to $162,700 and risk closure, according to Reuters.
The Italian parliament has stressed that the ban is aimed at protecting the country’s culinary traditions and agricultural jobs. While the bill has received support from Italian farmers and traditionalists, others have opposed the new law, arguing that synthetic meat could help consumers wean themselves off carbon-intensive traditional meat.
