Italy has become the first country in the world to ban the production, sale, and import of artificial meat – meat produced by cultivating animal cells in a laboratory rather than through the slaughter of animals.
The ban also includes the use of terms referring to traditional meat products to market plant-based meat alternatives. According to Reuters, violators of the ban could face fines of up to $162,700 and the risk of business closure.
The Italian Parliament emphasized that the ban aims to protect the country's culinary traditions and agricultural jobs. While the bill has received support from Italian farmers and traditionalists, others oppose the new law, arguing that synthetic meat could help consumers eliminate traditional meat, which is a major carbon emitter.
