Phillips is eligible to receive a League Cup medal. |
In the League Cup final, Man City defeated Arsenal 2-0 at Wembley thanks to a brace from young talent Nico O'Reilly. This victory secured Pep Guardiola's fifth League Cup title and the club's ninth trophy in the competition's history.
According to the organizers' regulations, each winning team receives 30 medals, with the possibility of requesting more if needed. This means that players who rarely play or are no longer part of the starting lineup can still be honored.
Phillips' case is a prime example. The English midfielder played a mere 7 minutes in the third round against Huddersfield in September, out of a total of 921 minutes across 32 appearances for Man City since joining in 2022. Despite this, he is eligible for a medal if the club decides to award it.
After returning from his loan spell at Ipswich Town, Phillips was subsequently loaned to Sheffield United for the January 2026 transfer window. However, this did not affect his chances of being recognized in the team's latest achievement.
If he receives the medal, this will be Phillips' seventh major title with Man City, alongside the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup. It's an impressive collection, but the extent of his contribution is a subject of much debate.
Phillips joined Man City for a fee of £42.5 million, with a contract until 2028 and a salary of around £150,000 per week. However, his journey at Etihad so far has been a story of a surplus player with an enviable track record.
