“Recreating”… village history
Leading us on a tour of the Quang Xa Village Museum, Mr. Nguyen Van Phu, Head of Quang Xa Village, shared: “The Quang Xa Village Museum was established with the purpose of collecting, preserving, researching, and displaying cultural heritage, artifacts, historical documents, natural and environmental information… of the village. The artifacts in this museum also contribute to serving the needs of education , learning, research, sightseeing, and cultural enjoyment, helping people understand the past more deeply and promoting the good historical and cultural values of the village. Although not yet large in scale, the museum currently has one room containing two display cases showcasing over 100 very valuable artifacts.”

To help us better understand the artifacts displayed at the village museum, Ms. Nguyen Thi Le, Head of the Village Front Committee of Quang Xa, further explained: "In this cabinet, we have arranged only artifacts related to the historical period before 1945. For example, these are ceramic bowls and plates and ancient coins from the Ly and Tran dynasties, donated by Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Trai, a resident of Quang Xa village. And here are paving stones, carved wooden pieces, and village maps dating back to before 1945, donated by Mr. Duong Viet Thu, an elder of the village. The next cabinet displays artifacts associated with the pre-revolutionary period of 1945 and the time when the whole country entered the resistance war against the French colonial invaders, including: machetes, crossbows, shields, flintlock guns, gongs, three-pronged bombs, pineapple bombs... of the militia and guerrillas of Quang Xa village." These items were donated by relatives of fallen soldiers and villagers. Here are some "Savings Rice Jars," "Rice Jars for Feeding the Troops," and copper pots for cooking rice for the militia... during the period when the whole country launched the campaign against famine and illiteracy, donated by Mr. Thai, Mrs. Duy, and Mr. Kho (residents of Quang Xa village). Related to the resistance war against the US, the Quang Xa Village Museum also received many valuable artifacts donated by villagers, items that were once associated with former soldiers and fallen heroes from the village, such as: backpacks, kerosene lamps, military uniforms, pith helmets, machine gun ammunition boxes, bomb casings, etc.
The village has many "firsts".
By tracing the information from the book "History of the Tan Ninh Commune Party Committee, 1930-2015," published in February 2018, and comparing it with the artifacts at the Quang Xa Village Museum, we found that the connection between the artifacts and the local history is very close, consistent, and highly convincing.
"Currently, many households in Quang Xa still possess quite a few valuable artifacts such as bronze bells, compasses, rice saving jars, cotton-making tools (tools from the time when Quang Xa village had cotton cultivation and weaving industries), rice mills, canteens, lunchboxes, kerosene lamps, etc. Due to the current cramped and temporarily borrowed exhibition space, the locality can only display a few artifacts. In the future, if Quang Xa can mobilize resources to build a larger museum, the locality will continue to encourage people and children in the village to donate more valuable artifacts to expand the scale and enhance the value of the museum," said Mr. Duong Trung Thoan, Secretary of the Party Branch of Quang Xa village.
It is known that Quang Xa was honored to be recognized by the People's Committee of Quang Binh province (formerly) as the "Quang Xa Fighting Village" and was ranked as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic in 2008 by Decision No. 3355/QD-UBND dated December 18, 2008. Notably, Quang Xa is also known as a "red village" as it has 21 pre-revolution cadres (out of a total of 22 people in the former Tan Ninh commune, now Ninh Chau commune), 21 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers (out of a total of 28 people in the commune), and 114 martyrs who fought against the French and Americans (out of a total of 194 martyrs in the entire commune).
Furthermore, thanks to its strong tradition of learning, Quang Xa boasts many "firsts": the village with the most teachers, the only village with a library and museum, and the village that has produced many famous musicians. From the 18th century to the present day, Quang Xa has maintained a regular village singing festival at the beginning of each spring. When the festival is held, almost the entire village participates in the singing.
According to Nguyen Van Nhi, Vice Chairman of the Ninh Chau Commune People's Committee: “The artifacts currently in Quang Xa village all possess ‘special’ value, not only historically but also in educating the younger generation about traditions. Therefore, we consider them invaluable assets of the locality and the entire society that need to be preserved together. In the near future, the Commune People's Committee will plan to upgrade the artifact storage area at the Quang Xa Village Museum, such as: focusing on restoring and improving the exhibition space; directing schools in the area to organize visits and extracurricular activities for students and youth union members; recounting historical stories associated with the artifacts to spread the value of the relics and the spirit of patriotism; and paying attention to building Quang Xa into a historical and cultural destination. We will mobilize social resources to invest in infrastructure, both preserving the relics and creating livelihoods for the people...”
