Accommodation is scarce for new students.

At the end of August, after universities announced their admission scores, new students at Thai Nguyen University began searching for accommodation to start their studies. This year, due to various reasons, there is a shortage of rental rooms in wards such as Phan Dinh Phung, Quyet Thang, and Tich Luong, and rental prices have increased significantly, causing considerable difficulties for parents and students.

For the 2025 admissions season, Thai Nguyen University has nearly 24,900 enrollment slots, an increase of approximately 6,000 compared to the previous year. Many units have seen a significant increase in the number of new students, such as the University of Science with approximately 3,000 students, and the International Faculty with a doubling of the number of new students wishing to enroll in advanced programs…

This is the main reason why the demand for rental rooms has surged in many wards such as Phan Dinh Phung, Quyet Thang, and Tich Luong… Another contributing factor is that after the administrative boundary merger, a number of officials from the former Bac Kan province moved down to work and rent houses.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai's family in Phu Xa 3 Hamlet, Tich Luong Ward (near the University of Industrial Technology) has just completed a row of 10 rental rooms. Even before the construction was finished, his phone was constantly receiving calls from students and working professionals making reservations. By the time it officially opened, all the rooms were quickly occupied.

Many parents also shared their struggles in finding accommodation for their children. Ms. Le Thi Lan from Lang Son province, whose child was admitted to the University of Education, said: "I researched beforehand on social media, but when I went to see the rooms in person, many were not of good quality. In the end, I was forced to rent an apartment at a much higher price than I had anticipated."

The dormitory system at Thai Nguyen University is almost full, accommodating only about 4,000 students, a very small number compared to the nearly 25,000 enrollment quota this year.

Previously, training units under Thai Nguyen University had proactively taken measures to ensure that admitted students had convenient accommodation. At the International Faculty, as soon as the Ministry of Education and Training opened the application registration system, the Faculty leadership directed the Youth Union and Student Association to survey and compile a list of reputable boarding houses around the Quyet Thang, Phan Dinh Phung, and Quan Trieu wards… to recommend to new students. The Faculty also worked with the Thai Nguyen University Dormitory Management Board to allocate a portion of the room fund specifically for newly admitted students.

At the University of Science, starting in March, the Youth Union proactively coordinated with neighborhood committees to review the list of rental accommodations, directly surveying the quality of rooms and security conditions. The university even advanced nearly 200 million VND as a deposit to reserve rooms, preventing the situation where students enroll without accommodation.

Simultaneously, dormitories are being renovated with improved electrical and water systems, and additional beds and wardrobes are being added to accommodate new students. Although training institutions had made preparations beforehand, the current shortage of accommodation in Thai Nguyen shows the increasing pressure as the enrollment scale rapidly increases.

Meeting student accommodation needs is not only an immediate welfare issue but also a strategic infrastructure investment challenge, linked to the position and brand of Thai Nguyen University. When dormitory infrastructure and student support services are comprehensively invested in, Thai Nguyen will truly affirm its role as a regional university, a place where domestic and international students can confidently study, research, and commit to long-term learning.
