The "One Commune, One Product" (OCOP) program has become a powerful and widespread movement for production development in the province's agricultural and rural areas. The program has helped localities, businesses, cooperatives, and production facilities proactively exploit their potential and advantages, and invest in improving and upgrading traditional village products into high-value goods. In particular, local agricultural products have been given a "new look," opening up opportunities to conquer domestic and international markets.
The purple bud tea product of UT Tea Investment and Development Co., Ltd. in Thanh Ba district, which has been recognized as meeting OCOP standards, has contributed to expanding the market and increasing economic value.
Phu Tho, a region in the midland region of Vietnam, is famous for its gently sloping tea hills and distinctive tea aroma, becoming an endless source of inspiration, appearing in many well-known literary works, poems, and songs. Perhaps this is clear evidence of the unique, long-standing product of this ancestral land. Distilled from the essence of nature, Phu Tho tea products are of high quality, but in the past, like many other local products, their market was unstable, and the economic value of some production and processing areas was not high. Determined to bring the local tea products to market and build a brand to enhance their value, many cooperatives, craft villages, businesses, and production households have invested in modern production lines, improved designs, and created many unique tea products.
In Thanh Ba district, a land of vast tea hills and especially the famous purple tea variety, with the decisive involvement of the entire political system and the dynamism and creativity of the producers and processing facilities, many famous and delicious tea products have been created and positively received by the market.
Notably, tea products such as purple bud tea bags, 75g purple bud tea, premium purple bud tea, and specialty green tea from UT Tea Investment and Development Co., Ltd., Zone 1, Van Linh Commune, have built, developed, and affirmed their brands, with many tea products reaching several South Asian and European countries. Company Director Le Thi Hong Phuong stated: “To produce tea products that meet standards and quality, we have implemented a tea production model based on a value chain from planting, caring for, harvesting to collecting, processing, distributing, and consuming, all controlled under contract and with traceability… In particular, the purple bud tea product is produced according to an international standard quality management system, using a unique tea roasting and drying method that preserves the valuable active ingredients found only in purple bud tea and creates a special, unique flavor.”
Currently, the province has approximately 15,000 hectares of tea plantations, of which more than 3,000 hectares are cultivated according to food safety and hygiene standards; tea yield reaches 118 quintals/hectare, with an annual production of over 185,000 tons. Simultaneously, a value chain has been established through support for green tea processing and trading establishments, cooperatives, and craft villages in tea cultivation, care, and processing techniques, packaging and labeling design, registration of codes and barcodes, and market connections to supermarkets, trade fairs, local areas, and exports to many countries around the world such as India, China, Germany, and the UK.
Truong Foods Production and Trading Joint Stock Company (Thuc Luyen commune, Thanh Son district), with its many high-quality fermented meat products, has contributed to "giving a new look" to local agricultural products and creating jobs for workers.
Another very distinctive product of Phu Tho is fermented pork. Previously, households mainly produced fermented pork on a small scale, primarily for family consumption and a small portion for the local and provincial markets. Implementing the OCOP program provides favorable conditions and a legal basis for businesses to enhance their competitiveness with other products on the market, gradually raising the value of the product.
Nguyen Thi Thu Hoa, Director of Truong Foods Production and Trading Joint Stock Company (Thuc Luyen commune, Thanh Son district), said: "Truong Foods is honored to have 6 types of fermented meat products that have achieved OCOP 4-star certification. To achieve this standard, we fully met all criteria from raw materials to production processes. Since being certified as an OCOP product of the province, our products have expanded their market to the entire Northern region. In 2024, revenue is estimated at 20 billion VND, providing employment for 50 workers with an average income of 6-8 million VND/person/month."
In addition, other distinctive products of the province such as Doan Hung pomelo, rice noodles, soy sauce, etc., have also been given a "new look" through the OCOP program to enhance their value, contributing to increasing income for people, especially in rural and mountainous areas. To date, Phu Tho province has 237 OCOP products that have achieved 3-star rating or higher. After certification, these OCOP products meet quality and food safety standards, suit consumer needs and tastes, build consumer trust, qualify for supermarkets and modern distribution systems, and have the opportunity to reach larger markets; contributing to the shift in the rural economic structure, successfully implementing the agricultural restructuring plan and the National Target Program for building new rural areas.
The pomelo fruit produced in Doan Hung district ensures high yield, quality, and attractive appearance, helping to increase economic value and improve the income of local people.
According to Comrade Tran Tu Anh - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province always pays attention to and has policies to support businesses in developing products. In 2024, the province developed, standardized, and upgraded an additional 80 products to achieve 3-star rating or higher with a mobilized value of nearly 12 billion VND, and also planned to develop 67 new 3-star products, 4 new 4-star products, and 7 products upgraded from 3-star to 4-star... As a result, by the end of 2024, the entire province had an additional 15 products meeting OCOP 4-star standards, 1 OCOP 5-star product, and 1 product continuing to complete its dossier to ensure it meets the conditions for OCOP 5-star recognition.
In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in coordination with the Department of Industry and Trade, organized a conference to support the introduction and consumption of the province's OCOP products. This connected OCOP product owners, bringing their products into stores and supermarkets; and developed agricultural product and OCOP product supply chains within the province and other localities nationwide. During the process of building, developing, and enhancing the value of OCOP products, all levels and sectors in the province have focused on supporting businesses in completing product documentation, designs, and packaging to create attractive products. The agricultural sector and localities have also promptly and effectively implemented Resolution 22/NQ-HĐND, dated December 9, 2021, of the Provincial People's Council to provide capital support to OCOP businesses, enabling them to expand production scale and invest in modern machinery and equipment for product processing.
With the active involvement of all levels and sectors, the joint efforts of businesses, producers, and localities, we believe that Phu Tho's OCOP products will develop even more strongly in the future, contributing to creating prosperous and warm springs.
