At Old Trafford, Tyler and Jack Fletcher were named in the Premier League squad for the first time in a single match by manager Ruben Amorim. Both started on the bench, with Jack coming on at the start of the second half.
Tyler and Jack both play as midfielders. Although twins, they chose to represent different youth national teams. Tyler followed in his father's footsteps, playing for Scotland's youth teams, while Jack has made several appearances for England at the U19 level. Last month, the two brothers even faced each other directly when representing their respective teams in the European U19 qualifiers.
Jack made his Manchester United first-team debut coming on as a substitute in the defeat against Aston Villa on December 21st, and against Newcastle, the young talent came on as a substitute for Masoun Mount. The Newcastle match also marked Tyler's first appearance in the Manchester United first-team Premier League squad. Both are now key players for Manchester United's U21 team in Premier League 2.
The decision to give opportunities to young players reflects the difficult situation faced by manager Amorim, as Manchester United are severely short of players. Bruno Fernandes is absent due to a thigh injury, Kobbie Mainoo is not fit enough to play, while Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are not yet back. In addition, Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo are on duty at AFCON.
On that special day, MU sealed the match with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle, thanks to a spectacular goal from Patrick Dorgu.
