Chi sadly recounted: In 2014, she and her husband got married and gave birth to Ho Sy Nhat Tan (9 years old) and Anh Duong. After moving out, the couple rented a room in Quang Tri town to facilitate her sewing work. Every day, Chi received goods to sew, while her husband worked as a construction worker. Although there were many difficulties, the young couple's life passed peacefully and happily. However, an incident happened to the family in 2022. "When Anh Duong was 1 year old, he had symptoms of pale skin, pale body, and frequent fever. When we took him to Hue Central Hospital for examination, my husband and I found out that he had congenital hemolytic anemia," Chi recalled.
Since Anh Duong fell ill, Chi quit her job and moved back to her parents' house to take care of her. Since then, the hospital has become her second home because she spends more time in the hospital than at home. Every month, she has to go to Hue City once or twice for a blood transfusion, and when her illness gets worse, she has to stay in the hospital for almost a month.
“The monthly cost of blood transfusion and medicine is about 3-5 million VND. This is the money my husband earns from working as a construction worker and porter. Despite the dedicated help of the doctors, Anh Duong's health is getting worse and worse,” said Chi. In November 2024, the doctors announced that they would perform a bone marrow transplant on Anh Duong so that he would no longer need blood transfusions. The whole family was very happy when they heard the news. Chi and her husband borrowed 300 million VND from the bank and borrowed another 200 million VND from relatives and friends to cover the cost of their child's surgery.
Looking at the scars still imprinted on her son Ho Sy Nhat Tan’s back, Chi could not hold back her tears as she recalled the time when her two children underwent bone marrow transplant surgery. “After the successful bone marrow transplant, the two children were in different hospital rooms. Nhat Tan said he saw his brother crying and felt sorry for him, just hoping that he would get well soon and go home. Looking at the two of them, I felt sorry for myself, just wishing I could endure that pain for my son,” Chi burst into tears.
Chi said that her son was discharged from the hospital after a week of bone marrow transplant, while Anh Duong had to stay in the special room for more than a month for monitoring. After returning home for 6 days, her daughter started coughing and had difficulty breathing again, so she had to return to the hospital for treatment and intravenous medication. Nearly 2 months later, she was diagnosed with a fungal lung infection. In February 2025, her condition improved, so her daughter was officially allowed to go home and take her own medicine, but she had to go to the hospital once a week for blood tests and general check-ups.
In April 2025, bad news came to Chi's family again. During a follow-up examination, the doctor said that Anh Duong's blood index was lower than the standard, so there was a high possibility that she would need a second bone marrow transplant. Hopefully, kind hearts and miracles will come to the little girl with the bright and hopeful name - Ho Anh Duong!
