The rain has been falling incessantly for days… In her family's shallot field, Mrs. Phan Thi Moi (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) is diligently hoeing and repairing the shallot beds that have been eroded by the rain. Every year, at this time, Mrs. Moi would have already harvested the shallots, which had large bulbs in her hand.
Mrs. Moi lamented, "With all this rain, we're doomed! Poor us shallot farmers! The soil is wet, the bulbs don't grow, they just sit there. People are offering to buy shallots for twenty or thirty thousand dong, but I have 8 acres of shallots and the bulbs are too small to sell."
From around the end of November in the lunar calendar until almost the new year, the people of Binh Phuc enter the shallot harvesting season. But so far, there are many buyers, but very few sellers…
With a 3-acre plot of land dedicated to growing shallots, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huong (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) stays up in her shallot fields from 6 am until past 11 am, anxiously watching the sky: “I just hope for sunny weather to save as many bulbs as possible. The leaves look green and fresh, but the bulbs are tiny, and some are damaged by fungus. Compared to previous years, the price is over 30,000 VND/kg this year, but there’s none to sell. Now, with Tet approaching, I’ll sell whatever bulbs, big or small, to whoever wants them.”
[ VIDEO ] - Residents of Tat Vien village are worried because their shallots are small and damaged due to the rain:
Binh Phuc commune has four villages that specialize in growing shallots for sale at the end of the year during Tet (Lunar New Year), especially Thanh Ly and Tat Vien villages. Shallots are grown on more than 120 hectares in the commune and sold to traders in Da Nang, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, etc. This is the main source of income for farmers in Binh Phuc during the Tet season. (Mr. Phan Ngoc Bon - Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Phuc commune)
According to Mr. Bon, the impact of the storm, cold weather, and prolonged heavy rain has left many farmers in Binh Phuc commune in dire straits. Most of the shallots are growing slowly, the bulbs are small, and while prices are high, the harvest is poor. People are facing economic difficulties at the end of the year.
In 2025, the People's Committee of Binh Phuc commune has identified shallots as its main crop. The commune will designate an area of 20 hectares for this main crop, identify seed sources, invest in cultivation, and ensure the organization of production and rural economic development in accordance with Criterion No. 13 of the advanced new rural commune program in 2025.
