The people of the mining region are proud that UNESCO recently officially inscribed the Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son - Kiet Bac complex of historical sites and scenic spots as a World Cultural Heritage site. Quang Ninh province possesses 5 out of 12 clusters and sites within this World Cultural Heritage complex.
Quang Ninh province has always been proud to possess Ha Long Bay. This natural wonder has been recognized three times by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site for its exceptional global aesthetic value, geological and geomorphological value, and magnificent and unique landscape. With its unique values, Ha Long Bay has always been a favorite destination for domestic and international tourists. Proof of this is that from 1996 to the present, this World Natural Heritage site has welcomed nearly 60 million visitors.
Along with World Natural Heritage and World Cultural Heritage sites, Quang Ninh currently boasts over 640 historical and cultural relics and scenic spots, and over 360 intangible cultural heritage items in 7 categories: traditional folk festivals, traditional crafts, folk performing arts, folk literature, social customs, written language, and folk knowledge.
Quang Ninh currently has 19 heritage items included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, including: the Then ritual of the Tay, Nung, and Thai people; the Silk House singing; the Cua Ong Temple Festival; the Tien Cong Festival; the Tra Co communal house festival; the Quan Lan communal house festival; the Bach Dang Festival; the Soong Co folk singing performance art of the San Chi people; the Soong Co folk singing performance art of the San Diu people; the Dam Ha communal house festival; the Van Ninh communal house festival; the Rice Planting Festival; the Wind-Avoiding custom of the Dao people in Dong Van commune, Binh Lieu district (now Hoanh Mo commune, Quang Ninh province); the Coming-of-Age Ceremony of the Thanh Y Dao people; the New Rice Celebration of the Tay people; folk knowledge about the art of making traditional costumes of the San Chi people; folk knowledge about the art of making and decorating costumes of the Thanh Phan Dao people; the social customs and beliefs of the Harvest Festival of the San Chi people; and the folk singing performance art of the coastal region of Quang Ninh province. In particular, Quang Ninh has the Then heritage of the Tay people, and is one of 11 provinces in Vietnam where Then of the Tay, Nung, and Thai ethnic groups has been inscribed by UNESCO on the list of representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
In addition, the province has nearly 120 festivals, including nearly 80 traditional festivals held throughout the year, especially vibrant during spring and Lunar New Year, attracting millions of tourists to visit, worship, and enjoy the festivities each year.
Over the years, Quang Ninh province has consistently identified the development of a green, sustainable, and circular economy as a particularly important task. In this regard, the province has simultaneously strengthened the preservation and conservation of its heritage while effectively exploiting and promoting its unique value to serve the goal of rapid, strong, and sustainable growth.
To further develop its rich heritage, in the Draft Political Report to the 16th Provincial Party Congress, term 2025-2030, Quang Ninh province identifies the following priorities: positioning and promoting the tourism brand of Ha Long - Quang Ninh, linked to the World Natural Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay, and the World Cultural Heritage Sites of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son and Kiet Bac; developing culture and people, building a rich and distinctive Quang Ninh culture, preserving and promoting heritage values, and developing the heritage economy. Continuing to implement the three strategic breakthroughs identified by the 13th National Party Congress and the 15th Provincial Party Congress, including developing a rich and distinctive Quang Ninh culture, linked to the development of cultural industries, heritage economy, and night economy; gradually building Quang Ninh into a leading destination for heritage and cultural tourism in Asia and the world.
With new strategies, directions, and plans for the future, it is certain that the heritage economy will continue to be an important component in Quang Ninh's economic development, becoming one of the province's new growth drivers.
