In late June, Sa Pa is as beautiful as a fairy tale world, with its endless stretches of lush green terraced rice fields. Anyone who gazes upon that verdant landscape is captivated and reluctant to leave.

The beauty of the rice fields in Sa Pa begins when the seedlings are a vibrant green, then turns a soft yellow, and finally a brilliant golden yellow, awaiting harvest. Every moment of the rice fields on those high mountain slopes stretching endlessly to the horizon captivates tourists visiting the Northwest highlands.

Viewed from above, the terraced rice fields weave together graceful curves on that mesmerizing green carpet.

And when viewed from the foot of the mountain, that lush green color creates a spectacular "stairway to heaven."

To admire Sapa during the rice harvest season, nothing is more wonderful than choosing a scenic journey across those picturesque rice valleys on the Fansipan cable car. From above, the landscape of the Muong Hoa valley is woven with soft green silk ribbons interspersed with the peaceful colors of the Northwest villages, as beautiful as a poem. A small house is surrounded by terraced rice fields stretching endlessly to the hillside.

The terraced rice fields, gently winding along the mountain slopes and covered in a lush green, create a vibrant and peaceful rural landscape amidst layers of white clouds.

Along Provincial Road 152, the route connecting Sapa ward with communes such as Ta Van, Ban Ho, and Muong Bo, tourists can easily spot groups of people leisurely walking, stopping by the roadside to admire the rice fields, take photos, and chat with the locals.

Many people enjoy witnessing firsthand the lush green terraced rice fields, the farmers weeding, irrigating, and tending to their crops…

Having spent over 10 years driving on these roads, Viet (38 years old, a long-time tourist driver in Sapa) is still delighted whenever the rice fields turn green. “From June to August, the entire Muong Hoa and Ta Van valleys are ablaze with a lush green color. During these days, there are many tourists, especially young people who love taking photos. I often take my friends to Ta Van village, where there are many cafes with ideal views of the terraced rice fields,” Viet said.

The terraced rice fields in Sapa are not only a beautiful landscape but also a cultural symbol closely associated with the lives of the Mong, Dao, Tay, and Giay ethnic groups.

For generations, with their diligent hands, they have built embankments, retained water, and cultivated crops on the steep mountain slopes, creating poetic landscapes that serve both their livelihoods and preserve the distinctive cultural imprint of the highlands.

Recognizing the allure of the lush green rice fields, many local homestays and cafes have designed relaxation spaces overlooking the terraced rice paddies.

These priceless viewpoints not only provide tourists with a complete experience but also contribute to promoting and preserving the cultural beauty of the highlands in a natural and sustainable way.

Travel + Leisure, a leading American travel magazine, ranked the terraced rice fields of Sa Pa as one of the most beautiful terraced rice field wonders in the world. And only when one sees this natural masterpiece painted with the green hues of rice fields does one understand that all the words used to describe this wonder cannot fully capture its exquisite beauty.
