The snail farming model is economically effective.
Mr. Tran Tuan Anh's snail farm in Da 2 village, Cam Duong commune, Lao Cai city, is preparing for a new breeding season. The snail breed has been carefully selected, and the breeding tanks have been thoroughly cleaned, ready for a productive and high-quality new season. Mr. Tuan Anh shared: “Currently, we are in the early stages of the season, preparing the breeding stock and encouraging the snails to come out of hibernation. I've prepared a lot of green vegetables. Once they're gone in a day or two, I add more to encourage the snails to come out of hibernation.”
Starting his snail farming business in 2019 with 3 ponds built on garden land covering approximately 200 m2, the initial capital was only 5 million VND. To date, Mr. Tuan Anh has expanded his operation to 14 ponds, covering an area of 1,200 m2. Applying new farming techniques, his family harvests about 1.2 tons of commercial snails per year, priced at around 60,000 – 90,000 VND/kg, earning a profit of over 100 million VND. He also proactively establishes stable outlets for many snail farmers in the area. Mr. Tuan Anh added: “I support the people with technical advice, pond design, providing breeding stock, disease prevention medicine, and guaranteeing the purchase of their produce. This allows me to supply more products to the market, which is also a stable source of income for the households.”
Commercially produced stuffed snails are priced at approximately 60,000 - 90,000 VND/kg.
The number of households participating in the snail farming model has increased to over 20 in various localities. The snail products are also exported to many provinces and cities nationwide. Recognizing the economic value of this model, local Party committees and authorities are also interested in expanding it.
Mr. Nguyen Van Chuyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Cam Duong commune, Lao Cai city, emphasized: "We regularly coordinate with specialized agencies of the city to continue supporting Mr. Tran Tuan Anh and related households in aquaculture. Especially for the snail farming product, we aim to help households access more scientific and technical knowledge as well as additional capital sources to further expand and maintain development."
The snail farming model of Mr. Tran Tuan Anh's family not only provides a stable source of income but also opens up a new direction for economic development in the locality. It contributes to promoting the emulation movement for economic development and striving to become wealthy.
